Indeed, 2011 is a lucky year for Pinay beauty queens!

At the Earls Court Two in London, it was announced a few minutes ago that our very own Gwendoline Ruais finished first runner-up at the 61st Miss World pageant.

The Miss World title was bagged by 21 year-old Ivian Lunasol Sarcos Colmenares from Venezuela. It's the country's sixth time to win the crown.

Miss Puerto Rico Amanda Victoria Pérez was hailed as second runner-up.

Completing the seven finalists were Miss England Alize Lily Mounter, Miss Korea Kyung Min Doe, Miss South Africa Bokang Ramaredi Montjane, and Miss Scotland Jennifer Reoch.

Gwendoline tied for the highest finish for the Philippines in the Miss World pageant, which our country has never won.

Actress Evangeline Pascual also finished first runner-up in 1973.

Gwendoline's second-place finish capped the Philippines' successful run in beauty pageants this year.

Shamcey Supsup finished 3rd runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant held last September 12 at Sao Paulo, Brazil.

(Angola's Leila Lopes won the crown.)

Dianne Necio was one of the Top 15 semifinalists in the Miss International contest held last night, November 6, at Chengdu, China.

(Ecuador's Maria Fernanda Cornejo won the title.)

Congratulations, Gwendoline!

Hi and peace to all. Funny that similar to the previous years' issue of who will air Pacman's fight, this matter on beauty pageants has turned into a Kapamilya vs. Kapuso fans clash once again - when in fact, there's not even an issue in the media between Donald Trump and Julia Morley battling so hard on whose contest is more prestigious than the other. Funnier thing, so many here are so serious on fighting which competition is better, while based on news articles, both pageants are said to be losing the ratings game in their home countries - ironically. From 35 million viewers in the 1970s, viewership of Miss Universe is said to have dropped to a very low 7 million in the US during recent years. Similarly, Miss World's popularity in the UK has waned so badly that no major TV network is airing it. Let's all just be happy that beautiful women from our country are doing great. Shamcey and Gwen are both breathtaking and stunning. Perhaps they can both help promote our country's tourism, and somehow oversha

i was not a fan before but when I saw her in the pageant I was so wow, she' changed a lot. She doesn't register to me in the picture. From the top 15, she and Korea are more deserving to win the crown. Congrats Gwen!

I'm solid kampamilya but when it comes to beauty pageants where candidates represent our country, wall na sa ang network war. Let us be happy for Gwen! We are very proud of you. This is quite a feat. Mabuhay ang mga Filipina.

113 competing in Miss World sounds impressive compared to just 89 in Miss Universe. But you have to realize that at Miss Universe, only 1 girl represents the whole of Great Britan. At Miss World, there's 4 - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Add Gibraltar and there's 5 British girls sa Miss World. At Miss Universe, there's 1 girl representing China. Sa Miss World, may China na, may Hong Kong pa. As "overseas departments", Guadeloupe and Martinique competes with all the other French provinces in the Miss France pageant. Winner of Miss France goes to Miss Universe. At Miss World, 3 French citizens competed - France...plus Guadeloupe and Martinique. The more the merrier kumbaga sa Miss World. At Miss Universe, it's quality over quantity, and therefore more competitive. Venezuela, the most successful country in pageantry, and despite the fact that the girls they send to Miss World are only their second best, still has won 6 Miss World crowns. The winner of Miss Venezuela, of course, competes i

gwen is good, she really did her best...but for me she won maybe because to give credits to the new franchise holder of ms.world philippines, para my panlubag loob at maengganyo pah to work and promote more the pageant, with beauty with a purpose as frontline, well in fact the more bwp programs kuno the more income for julia morley. i believe julia gave the crown for venezuela kac ala namang iba para di halata na pinaboran nya ang pinas, next year malamang makukuha na natin ang korona... after all its about business, business and business just like ms.u dah.

My first time to watch Miss World. Comparing it to how the Miss Universe and Miss International were staged, I must dare say that its way better, more sensible and more empowering for women. Congratulations Miss World Philippines. Its a well-deserved win.
