The racist allegations about the controversial cover photo of FHM Philippines continue. But its subject, Bela Padilla, reiterates on her interview with BBC World News, "We weren't thinking of harming anyone and we weren't thinking of racial discrimination."

Bela Padilla's controversial cover photo for the March 2012 issue of FHM Philippines continues to become a hot topic that it has now reached international headlines.

The cover photo, which was immediately recalled by FHM Philippines, showed Bela clad in a sexy fuschia bikini and being surrounded by "black" female models.

Below the cover was the blurb: "Bela Padilla: Stepping Out Of The Shadows."

International news agency BBC News picked up the ongoing debate and asked its subscribers whether the allegations of racism was intended on the photograph.

This was posted on BBC's Facebook fan page last night, February 28.

Like what happened on FHM Philippines' Facebook page last weekend, the BBC post was also swarmed by different opinions from its subscribers.

Facebook user Ruth Elias commented: "Definitely racist and offensive. The caption and the body language of the models says it all. They are all submissive."

Joanna Rimmer also posted a similar opinion: "I find it vulgar and yes, rather racist. Sick and tired of seeing women portrayed in this manner."

NO INTENTION TO DISCRIMINATE. However, in her interview with BBC News' Mishal Husain, Bela reiterated that the picture has no intention of discriminating any race.

The GMA-7 talent said, "I don't really have any idea that I would get such negative reaction.

"But I was proud with the cover we did because racism was totally out of our heads.

"So I didn't expect that we'd get negative feedback from it because we had no intention of discriminating anyone anyway."

Bela's interview was broadcast live last night, February 28, on BBC's Impact.

Here is an excerpt of that interview:

Mishal: "When you saw that picture of you and the black model behind you and 'stepping out of the shadows,' it didn't ring any alarm bells to you?

they didn't intend to offend anyone but they're very insensitive and also ignorant of the issue. kung di pa napansin internationally, those concerned will probably shrug this off. publicity rin ito kay bella - masayang masaya na siguro ang manager niya. i think this girl is so ready to take her clothes off to reach the top.

joshoncreek, it speaks to the mentality of a lot of filipinos that they can't even see or realize the racism that is so apparent in the magazine cover. instead of trying to justify the cover, try learning history and opening your mind to the possibility that the cover may not be offensive to you, but it might be offensive to others, especially those who are of darker skin. this is why i find a lot of the filipino media racist, but this one takes the cake. referring to darker skinned women as shadows connotes a sense of inferiority and undesirability. if they had wanted to make bela striking, they could have actually used real shadows, or a dark background rather than women painted in black to do that.

SWEET IRENE do u also feel frustrated that no matter how u try to explain to some people why i's racist, they cannot understand it? Ganito pala feeling nina martin luther king noon. Hirap pala yon. Kailangan magpursige ng daang taon para maiba mentalidad ng tao. Hope experts from UP or Ateneo will explain this to all of us. Or better yet, si Oprah!

naku wag ng isama si marian rivera dito. di niya need ang fhm cover to be noticed noh...the issue is about awareness on racism, if you're an artist dapat eh sensitive ka sa lahat. on fhm and bela gandanghari's part, obvious na lack of judgement and sensitivity ang pinairal d2. yun yon oh...

152 pep_reader_online_dubai February 29, 2012 12:53 PM i don't find it racist or insensitive or offensive. you have to read the article to understand before you judge. come on, it's stepping out of the shadow, and the shadow's color is black. Bela is a human being, naturally her shadow should be a human being. Hey, you cannot put a dog or any animal there to represent Bela's shadow! Grow up people and sometimes try to broaden your mind to see the whole picture. -----------------Sure her shadow should be of a human being but the point is why not use her own image as her shadow instead of putting another human beings. How can FHM team be so insensitive knowing our culture denigrates dark skin Pilipinos?? Well just like what others said, the damage is done...nag sorry na at pulled out na lahat ang FHM sa market hehehe.

angel, walang point ang pagiging magaling sa english kung puro stoopid at ignorante naman ang mga sagot mo. so i guess mas matalino pala si paris hilton or lindsay lohan compared to the non english speaking Japanese or South Koreans? i guess mas matalino pala ang mga filipinos working in call centers compared to non english speaking chinese, indian, or korean engineers?

ang daming nagmamalinis dito. in some way or the other mga racist din kayo. bat kayo natatawa pag inaapi si mika ng bubble gang? bat kayo natatawa pag binabatuk-batukan si ruby rodriguez? there's nothing wrong with cover, may mga taong sadyang naglalagay lang ng kulay at interpretasyon sa mga bagay na simple.

gorgeous aleck, being ig-norant and oblivious is not an excuse. hindi dahil nag sorry si bela ay bakit ako nainis sa kanya, it is because she tried to excuse or justify the photoshoot by stating that they painted the women in black which is completely wrong and stoopid. to anyone who has ever studied anything about racis-m, that is incredibly offensive. even australia was attacked internationally when performers on tv used black face in their homage to michael jackson. why should fhm be excused for their ig-norace and bela be excused for her stoopid answers? anyone who has any knowledge of the history of racis-m would be offended by her comments, which the interviewer rightfully told her.

had i not attended a workshop and training on multicultural sensitivity, I wouldn't notice any racism on the picture. The act of racism is not always intentional, in fact, most of the time it's unconscious. Sa orientation ko, I'm ethically mandated to be aware of my own privilege and other people's experience of oppression. I don't think it's narrow-mindedness although some of you may insist it to be. I believe I'm just aware of how White privilege consciously and unconsciously makes other people feel bad. And it's okay if you don't agree with me.
