Celebrities air opinion in Twitter on Chief Justice Renato Corona's impeachment

by Mark Angelo Ching posted on May 29, 2012  STATS: 71713 Views | 115 Comments

Chief Justice Renato Corona was impeached for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Philippine Constitution.

After 44 days, the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato C. Corona in the Philippine Senate ended today, May 29, 2012.

The result: 20 senators voted "Guilty" and only three senators voted to acquit.

Only 16 votes were needed to render impeachment.

Those who voted to convict Chief Justice Corona were Senators Edgardo Angara, Alan Peter Cateyano, Pia Cayetano, Franklin Drilon, Chiz Escudero, Jinggoy Estrada, Teofisto Guingona III, Gregorio Honasan, Panfilo Lacson, Lito Lapid, Loren Legarda, Sergio Osmeña III, Kiko Pangilinan, Koko Pimentel, Ralph Recto, Bong Revilla, Tito Sotto, Antonio Trillanes, Manny Villar, and Juan Ponce Enrile.

Those who voted to acquit were Senators Joker Arroyo, Miriam Defensor- Santiago, and Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Announcing his vote to convict, Senator Recto said, "In a few hours, we will be pulling the plug on this afternoon political telenovela."

Senator Recto was correct in a lot of ways.

The impeachment trial, aired live in local news channels and at times breaking regular programming on ABS-CBN, TV5, and GMA-7, held the public rapt with attention.

We wouldn't be surprised if ratings show that today's CJ Corona trial dominated other programs in its timeslot.

The impeachment trial was at times more exciting than the usual soap operas and reality shows.

All the drama it caused—emotional outbursts during the trial and esteemed lawyers and statesmen fighting each other on live TV—are some of the most memorable moments in television history.

Filipino Twitter users were so affected that the hashtag #cjontrial trended almost daily on the social networking site and microblogging service.

Several Filipino celebrities tweeted about this trial almost daily, whether or not they have political leanings.

Musician and vocal supporter of President Aquino, Jim Paredes, tweeted his joy over the conviction.

"Convicted!

quo vadis mga pinoy after this political telenovela? remember people power of 1986! pinoys are mahilig sa mob rule, nakikisakay kahit di-naiintiidihan. may nangyari ba sa pamumuhay ng mga nakakaraming pilipino after EDSA? Dis is dyas a political vendetta of Pnoy against his political enemies. Next in line are mga Arroyos, Abalos , pagkatapos wala na.

He should have known the consequences of being a mid-night appointee. He was appointed on the time Arroyo was about to exit as the Philippine President. He should have declined the offer knowing new governance will take place. Then came his issuing of T.R.O. when the Arroyo's were trying to escape the country. This fueled anger to some. He should have just resigned than going all through these humiliations.

I disagree with the decision of the Impeachment court. First of all the evidences presented by the prosecution are questionable at best. Ablou the properties of the Coronas, they failed to establish any guilt. And thehy were acquired thru questionable means and should not be acceptable as evidence. With regards to the dollar accounts, most of the documents presented by the prosecution thru Ombudsman Carpio, she enumerated 82 dollar accounts allegedly owned by the CJ. How vcan you maintain so many accounts without being questioned by the banks ablout its origin. Were the dollars being deposited acquired thru legal means or any other means other than legal?? If its thru legal means, then gthere is no violation of any law. However,if the dollars were acquired thru questionable means , then its a crime. The prosecution and Ombudsman Carpio faikled to prove the Chief Justice acquired those dollars illegally. The Statement of Assets and Liabilities can be amended. If he forgot to list those dollar accounts in his S

p4n4lo.... i agree that PNoy does not need na magbayad para lang ma convict si CJ Corona, all he needs to do ay gamitin ang buong pwersa at kapangyarihan ng gobyerno at takutin ang mga hindi boboto against the chief justice.

He is just an example kase siya ang kailangan at dapat imbestigahan... Corona is only an example so everyone will open their eyes from now onwards.
