Celebrities air opinion in Twitter on Chief Justice Renato Corona's impeachment

by Mark Angelo Ching posted on May 29, 2012  STATS: 71733 Views | 115 Comments

Chief Justice Renato Corona was impeached for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Philippine Constitution.

After 44 days, the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato C. Corona in the Philippine Senate ended today, May 29, 2012.

The result: 20 senators voted "Guilty" and only three senators voted to acquit.

Only 16 votes were needed to render impeachment.

Those who voted to convict Chief Justice Corona were Senators Edgardo Angara, Alan Peter Cateyano, Pia Cayetano, Franklin Drilon, Chiz Escudero, Jinggoy Estrada, Teofisto Guingona III, Gregorio Honasan, Panfilo Lacson, Lito Lapid, Loren Legarda, Sergio Osmeña III, Kiko Pangilinan, Koko Pimentel, Ralph Recto, Bong Revilla, Tito Sotto, Antonio Trillanes, Manny Villar, and Juan Ponce Enrile.

Those who voted to acquit were Senators Joker Arroyo, Miriam Defensor- Santiago, and Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Announcing his vote to convict, Senator Recto said, "In a few hours, we will be pulling the plug on this afternoon political telenovela."

Senator Recto was correct in a lot of ways.

The impeachment trial, aired live in local news channels and at times breaking regular programming on ABS-CBN, TV5, and GMA-7, held the public rapt with attention.

We wouldn't be surprised if ratings show that today's CJ Corona trial dominated other programs in its timeslot.

The impeachment trial was at times more exciting than the usual soap operas and reality shows.

All the drama it caused—emotional outbursts during the trial and esteemed lawyers and statesmen fighting each other on live TV—are some of the most memorable moments in television history.

Filipino Twitter users were so affected that the hashtag #cjontrial trended almost daily on the social networking site and microblogging service.

Several Filipino celebrities tweeted about this trial almost daily, whether or not they have political leanings.

Musician and vocal supporter of President Aquino, Jim Paredes, tweeted his joy over the conviction.

"Convicted! Impeached na pala sa Lower house palang..," tweeted @jimparedes.

Ok, Corona is impeached. So dapat lahat sila imbestigahan din kasi corrupt din sila lahat dyan. Why convict only 1 person? yes i agree he is also guilty BUT they should also start investigating EVERYONE para patas!

CORONA WAS NOT CONVICTED BECAUSE HE WAS CORRUPT! HE WAS CONVICTED because he did not declare his SAL N PROPERLY. Yun lang po yun.

how i wish that this would be the beginning of the gradual elimination of corruptions in our government! There must be an ammendment that would change the entire government structures! So many positions for a small country like our Philippines !!!! There must be a time for a GOOD CHANGE!!

greencardholder, yes, sa ngayon ay tanggal sa puwesto lang ang mangyayari sa kanya. Kasi that is the essence of impeachment trial. Pero may araw para sa criminal charges na pwedeng isampa sa kanya. Ang importante, ma-convict siya sa mga paratang sa kanya. At yung mga kaparusahang mabibigat, darating sila diyan.

p4n4lo 05/29/2012 | 07:20 PM so paano na yung pera maibabalik pa ba sa government yun o pabaon na lang...at the end of the day the Filipino people is the LOSER of this f-reak show... ------------- ang sabe, wala naman syang kinuha sa gobyerno... it's just that he didn't declare all his assets in his SALN due to most of his account are in dollars... but this accounts were acquired in good faith... but the act of not declaring it is destroying the public's trust on him... not being transparent... for the reason why he did that is for sure to avoid high payment of taxes...
