Katie Holmes has stopped wearing her wedding ring.

The former Dawson's Creek actress has stepped out for the first time without her wedding and engagement bands since announcing her divorce from Tom Cruise.

Katie was photographed in New York City as she left a Project Runway taping and noticeably had no jewellery on her left ring finger as she lifted her hand to touch her hair while inside a car.

The mother of the actor's youngest child, Suri Cruise, had worn the ring last week, only days before she filed legal papers for their separation on Thursday (June 28).

Katie claims her marriage to Tom was ''irretrievably'' broken for at least six months.

Sources close to Oblivion star Tom say Katie's version of events are baffling, claiming her husband of five years had ''no idea'' she was going to legally end their marriage.

Katie—who wants sole custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter—also claimed both she and Tom have been residents of New York for ''at least two years," even though their main family home is in Beverly Hills, California.
