Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy on why he chose Manila as a shooting location: "It's just so colorful and ugly and gritty, raw and stinky and crowded."

Sa interview ng Tonight host na si Charlie Rose kay Tony Gilroy (kaliwa), direktor ng The Bourne Legacy, tinanong kung bakit Manila ang napili nitong lokasyon para sa ilang mahahalagang eksena ng pelikula, kabilang na ang climactic chase scene tampok ang mga bidang sina Jeremy Renner at Rachel Weisz (right).

Ang Apocalypse Now ay ang 1979 Hollywood film ni Francis Ford Coppola na kinunan sa Pilipinas.

Bida rito ang legendary actor na si Marlon Brando, kasama sina Martin Sheen at Robert Duvall.

Patuloy ni Tony, “And they had this really sort of dormant film industry and they wanted us.

“You know, they really wanted us.

“You wanted to go some place where you sort of say, ‘Hey, can we shut down this boulevard for every weekend for a month and can we take over your neighborhood for six…’

"You want him to say yes, but you want him to go, ‘Alright but that's really tough but we can call the President. We can call this guy. We can do that. We can get that.’

    Reality and truth hurts but that's the way it is. I am and always will be proud that I am not from Manila though I lived and worked there before.

    that's why manila was picked dahil it was all of the above. just like comedians do not change their looks but instead use their deformity or ugliness to their advantage for their careers to amuse the public, then might as well use the existing landscape sa manila in a movie and profit from it. yun ang klase ng location na hinanap nila. if manila was any different then they would not shoot the movie here.

    stinky talaga.... nakakasulasok amoy ng mga basura sa daan... sore eyes sa mata ang mga barung barong ng mga squatters.. kaya pagpumupunta ako ng manila nagmamadali akong umuwi ng probinsya.

    Nothing wrong with what Tony Gilroy said. He meant it to describe Manila in the most colorful way that will create impact. The fact is that the land mass, resources and infrastructures that exists can not handle the population levels and never will. The slums, garbage, constant flooding, over-crowding, illegal street vendors, chaotic tricycles, jeepneys and buses, security nightmare, etc will always be there. This is an age old problem that Filipinos in general just can not solve. Period! Truthfully, not too many Western tourists would want to subject themselves to this kind of experience. It's just so out of this world for them.

    I saw the film. Everyone in the cinema were excited when the lead casts arrived at the airport... Palakpakan pa nga. But suddenly, when the shot was outside the airport.... Tahimik na lahat, nagbubulungan na, hehe. Reality bites. I have nothing against the director coz what he said was the reality. Lets just take it constuctively guys. Boy Abunda i think was offended, but he has to watch the film to understand the description made by the director.

    What's the big fuss people. Why are we so onion skinned when other people describe Manila the way it really is? For all we know, the only reason the Phil. was chosen as the location site for that particular scene was because they truly needed a colorful, ugly, gritty, raw, stinky and crowded shooting location for that particular scene, which Manila has a lot of. Let's just be thankful it did not happen after habagat-otherwise they would have also included "garbage filled city"-showing the manila bay promenade, esteros,etc drowning in stinky garbage. Instead let us take this as a challenge to clean up our surroundings and do something to change the image of our country.

    masakit sa pandinig natin pero minsan kelangan marining yan lalo na sa mga foreigners na walang biased sa kanilang opinon at prangka... I am from Manila and u know what...i have to go to the province to de-stress.. to get fresh air, to avoid traffic jam, the dirt, the soot... totoo naman eh... wala tayo magawa realidad yan

    Too bad those words came out of Boy Abunda's mouth. Perhaps out of frustration or embarassment because of what the director said. Boy seemed like a well-educated type of person. I like his shows and I'm one of his admirer. After all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. That is what this thread is all about.

    Totoo naman ang sinabi niya about Manila. I've been to other countries in Asia and I could not help but compare the foreign cities I've visited with Manila and other places in the Philippines. We are way way behind Singapore, Shanghai, South Korea and Japan in terms of cleanliness and modernization. But the Philippines have so many natural wonders that we can be proud of and market to foreign tourists if only the Philippine government will improve our infra-structures, peace and order and waste disposal. Only then can we really say that "It's more fun in the Philippines".

    His description of Manila is factual. Even I don't like going to Manila when I go on vacation. Very stressful seeing how it is. Well, almost the whole country's a mess but Manila is the worst. I wish they showed more of the beautiful scene at the end where they were at the boat in the ocean. Where is that anyway? When they started showing that scene I wished they'd show more. Was disappointed it only lasted a couple of minutes. The scenery at the end is just breathtaking in contrast to the Manila scene.

    I don't see anything wrong about the director's comment. He was asked "why Manila?" and he just answered the question with all honesty. Kelangan pa bang isugar-coat ang sagot niya at sabihing "I chose Manila because it's so colorful and beautiful, infrastructures are great, roads are clean and no traffic at all" para lang ma-please ang mga filipinos? Di naman kelangan maging balat sibuyas kung totoo naman ang sinasabi.

    We love Manila PHIL for all its warts and all because its our beloved country and it's about late coming that PHIL leaders - people should vote wisely - must be hold accountable to be true leaders with foresight, leadership, wiser and use heads and not emotions - seperate Religion and State - decide what is best for the people, environment and the future of the country. One big example is the FLOODINGS - it's 2012 and this is our old great grandfathers problem - still one problem with no solution that doesnt need a genius to solve. IF true Filipinos love their country - start with the basic - let's CLEAN our house.

    Jeez people get a grip! Have you guys seen Slumdog Millionaire? They showed way worst parts of India especially in Mumbai, their Bollywood. They showed out-houses a.k.a. toilets but with just a hole in the ground, rickety doors and with people lining outside to use them for a rupee or two. But the people of India were not up in arms towards the movie production. Art reflects life, it showcases the truth, we'll just have to accept it.

    Many Indians hated that movie and were very upset with the depictions of Mumbai as basically a very dirty poor slum area with religious riots, police brutality, kidnapping of children to be beggars. An Indian colleague of mine told me that there's more to india than just slums, call centers and Taj Mahal.

    Yes, they may have been upset at first but they can't deny the fact that it brought their country the much needed . In fact, the opposite is true, their tourism rate increased and more big budgeted Hollywood movies have been shot there like Eat, Pray, Love and A Mighty Heart and currently, the thriller Zero Dark30. Fact is, when a movie calls for a a setting with chaos, grit and lost of character, producers tend to check 3rd world locations because it's just hard to find places which are "slum" enough in the 1st world. So in a twisted way, the least presentable areas of a 3rd world country are unintentionally what brings in that very much needed income.
