Sagot ni Tony, “We didn' t want to go to Europe. Bourne's gone to Europe.

“We thought about Latin America, Southeast Asia… there are several films that we’re planning on going to Latin America.

“Pat Crowley, the producer and I who've travelled all over around the world and all these movies, we went... had a beauty pageant.

“We went to Jakarta [Indonesia], we went to Ho Chi Min City [Vietnam], we went to Manila, over a course of a couple of weeks.

"And we landed in Manila and it felt so Bourne-ish.

"It's just so colorful and ugly and gritty, raw and stinky and crowded...

“They had a great film industry there for years built off the Vietnam films.

Imagine kung sasabihin ito ng isang Pinoy Direktor towards other countries especially after making a film there? THINK. LOL

"It's just so colorful and ugly and gritty, raw and stinky and crowded." Whats wrong with what he said? It is so true. But then I don't think he meant to insult, what he wanted to say was that Manila has the character of the city that was needed and would be very effective for his film. Lets stop being so sensitive. His remarks are something we ourselves, Filipinos, hear or say every single day. Cmon Filipinos can't anyone say anything about our country without us being up in arms? Remember, we made movies like Insiang, Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag, City After Dark etc and some that we proudly showed in Cannes and internationally! Making this issue only draws more attention from the outside world. ..bringing ourselves more embarrassment. Chill!

Di naman entire Philippines ganyan. Dito sa provinces, malinis linis naman, orderly at me disiplina even sa traffic. Try Davao. Kelangan lang talaga e-work out yang problema sa Manila. Kelangan lang nating magtulungan lahat.

Truth hurts doesn't it? He's telling it like it is, no sugar-coating. Go to Manila, majority of the places are just as he described. Only a quarter of the entire land area is not an eye soar the rest are.... well, go see for yourself. If you are to make a TRUTHFUL assessment of Manila, you will end up describing it like he did or perhaps even worse, since he did not even mention the much uglier side which includes crime, corruption, pollution and poverty.

Kase naman dapat tinanong muna ang production nila how the Phils is going to be portrayed... saang areas ang shooting. Obviously, kung sa slums ang shooting expected na only the bad side of manila will be shown. More Fun in the Phils? Who are we kidding!!!!!

Very well said, Aiveec and Ruby.

Funny. This thread is now becoming a political issue. If the government is unreliable and can't help in cleaning up the mess then individuals should start taking accountability for trashing their surroundings. Clean up after yourselves or no one will. Squatters/Illegal settlers whatever the case maybe, you can still have a descent, clean and livable space by disposing your trash properly.

"The Philippine economy has experienced repeated boom-and-bust cycles in the 5 decades since the nation achieved independence from the United States in 1946. In the 1950s and early 1960s its economy ranked as the second most progressive in Asia, next to that of Japan. After 1965, when Ferdinand E. Marcos became president, the nation experienced economic problems and social unrest, especially from the 1970s, when corruption and cronyism the practice of appointing friends to well-paid posts regardless of their qualifications took hold. In 1972, Marcos declared a state of emergency and placed the country under martial law to stifle unrest and control economic development. By his third term in 1981, democratic institutions in the country had severely eroded, foreign debt ballooned, and the country's economy plummeted. In less than 20 years, the Philippines had gone from relative prosperity to becoming the "sick man of Asia."

Marcos has been gone since 1986... 26 years later, the Philippines is in a way worse state than in the 70's or 80's.

Just because the city looked better during the Martial Law years doesnt mean the general state of affairs were better at that time. Its very unfair to make assumptions based on aesthetics alone.

The "boom and bust cycle" comes sporadically. Life is such. Philippines is not the only country who is experiencing such problem. This is going on globally. However, that doesn't mean people should give up. It's not the end of the world. If the government can't help then each individual need to start coming up with ideas to improve their living condition. For example: Here in US people have been living on government assisted program like food stamp and so forth. Some people are strong enough to work but they choose not to work. It is called laziness. Why should they? They get everything free. Free government housing, free food and so much more. In addition, this is the kind of lifestyle they have been accustomed to which they have inherited from their forefathers and it has been passed on to the new generations. If these people change their ways and become a role model for the generations to come, perhaps we may not have these problems.

Just another typical stupid trash comment! This kind of stuff makes me so mad , I can't even put into words how idiotic this is! At the turn of the 20th Century, Asians like Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese were stereotyped by Western Culture as strange, cheap, smelly, ignorant and d-i-r-t-y! This reminds us that though the world has progressed with respect and tolerance for other cultures, some things just never change!

Tolerance, like you said, is the key word here. Tolerance to outsiders comments on how they perceive our city. Let's not be in denial..but let's strive more to fix things starting from the small things we can...and hope the bigger things will get resolved eventually.

We enjoyed watching the movie and in fact were excited to watch it for the fact that it was shot in the Philippines, but very disappointed because it only showed what exactly Director Gilroy was talking about. Not sure if it helped our tourism, I thought it put Manila in a bad light. I would encourage whatever board who approves or gives permit for international movies to be shot there, to really look at the script and story and locations if it is in accordance to what we are trying to convey to the rest of the world that it is indeed more fun in the Philippines. Sorry to say but I almost covered my face coming out of the theater not because I was a Filipino but because of what we saw in the movie...

Its more fun in the Philippines...but definitely not fun to be in Manila. C'mon guys...be honest to yourself. Manila is mostly now a big dump. Sad, but true. I am glad that at least ABS CBN on TFC is now showing other, more beautiful places in the Philippines..at least we have some saving grace left. I hate to sound unpatriotic, but everytime I'm in Manila, I feel the itch of leaving just mere hours after my arrival in the city.

I think we should, as citizens be ashamed of it, more so the government... but still, it's in each of us Pinoys to really do something about it. But hey on the bright side, we got 'investors' interested. hehe

I was actually impressed he said that. It's true, right? rather than dissing him for being honest. I'd be encouraged to try and fix his statement. SO next time a director will pick Manila for a filming location, it will be about the place being beautiful. Besides, what's the big deal? he was just talking about MANILA. it's not like he was talking about the whole Philippines. Even the "THEY REALLY WANTED US" is true. oh well..

    110. I beg to disagree on your comments that kahit sino pang Presidente ang uupo that its a convoluted situation. IF ONLY , the past leaders of our country governed like what President Aquino is doing now, I'm 101 percent sure things would have been a lot different. The past disgustingleaders in our country did so much damage to our country due to big time corruption and bad governance that it will probably take a lot more years or even decades to undo what has been done.
