Non-payment of equity by foreign performers and poor support for local musicians are among the issues that bother Jose Mari Chan as a member of the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) Board of Directors.

Balladeer and composer Jose Mari Chan, who is known for his well-loved compositions over the years, with songs that reached up to Double Diamond and Quadruple Platinum Status, is this year's Lifetime Achievement Awardee of the 4th Star Awards for Music.

"It’s an affirmation that, ‘We approve of and like what you've done!'" aniya sa interview sa PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) kamakailan sa New World Hotel coffee shop.

Jose Mari Chan thanked the press organization for giving him the honor.

"But it should not stop you and it should not make you resilient,” banggit niya. “Because the creative process continues.

"And even if you still write [songs], na hindi na relevant sa mga kabataan, the art of writing itself should.

"Yes, because there will always be people who would appreciate it.

“Even if sampu na lang sila, o kahit isa na lang [ang makikinig]. It still justifies.

“So one should not stop.”

CLIFF RICHARD OF THE PHILIPPINES.  In a career as a singer-songwriter that spanned more than four decades, starting in 1967, Jose Mari has made a distinct mark in the industry for his well-loved ballads.

Popular hits such as “Afterglow,” “Deep In My Heart,” “Can We Just Stop And Talk A While,” “Refrain,” “A Love To Last A Lifetime,” “My Girl, My Woman, My Friend” (with Janet Basco), “Beautiful Girl,” “Tell Me Your Name,” “Be Careful With My Heart” (with Regine Velasquez), “Christmas In Our Hearts” and the 2005 SEAG (Southeast Asian Games) theme “We're All Just One.”

Katulad ng Alaska theme ("Sa lasa't lasa, walang tatalo, wala pa ring tatalo sa Alaska..."), Knorr soup mix theme ("There are Chinese soups, and there are Chinese soups, but there's nothing like Knorr real Chinese soup..."), BBC 2 station jingle ("Welcome, world to this big, beautiful country...") at ang "Love at 30,000 feet" para sa Philippine Airlines (PAL).

Nakapagtrabaho rin siya bilang musical scorer sa mga pelikula nina Lino Brocka (Stardoom in 1971), Orlando Nadres (Dito Sa Aking Puso in 1972), at Luciano B. Carlos (Karioka Etchos de America in 1971).

But starting out in the local music industry was not easy for Jomari.

ako rin nanghihinayang ako sa kinahihinatnan ng pinoy songs... mas tinatangkilik pa kasi ng most kabataan ang Korean Pop na mga yan... kaya nga pag nakikita ko sa MYX na K-pop nanaman, i'm turning the tv off... nakakawalang gana. Ito ang isa pa sanang bigyan ng pansin, kasi it is our culture. tatak pinoy ika nga, bakit wala man lang magawa ang mga music stations to promote, rather, promoting yang mga k-pop na yan na hindi naman naiintindihan ang lyrics... no offense meant to the k-pop artists... tayong mga pinoy dapat ang magising... we have our own music to promote... let's support OPM naman...

We have only a few composers and those composers does not make music as much as their foreign counterpart . Most of the time, ang laman ng album ng mga singers are revivals, meron mang original maybe 1 or 2 lang . Kulang din sa production ang pag promote ng song, dunno if it's the record companies or the producer themselves. Are the recording companies members of the OPM too? Correct me if I am wrong, di ba ang mga record companies are mostly franchise of an american recording co. ? Maybe it is a matter of dollar and cents. I wish there would be more composers that could give us more original songs. Mostly ang nakikita kong may original songs eh yun mga banda, like PNE, Eraserheads, etc . The rest of the league of singers don't have enough orginal song under their name. With a lot singing contest around, how about a contest for composers? I am sure there are a lot of hidden talents around, di pa lang na ta tap. We should have more of Jose Mari Chan, Rey Valera, Martin Nievera, Gary V. Yeng Constantino who are singers and composers themselves.

rom_05 : Sorry if I broke ur heart with what I saw - that was my opinion and am sorry that our standards are different. I don't use emotions or AWA - let say if am hiring people or if grades are low and employees work are mediocre - sorry but I dont pay for pasang awa or mediocre. I respect ur opinion and again sorry if what I saw was pathetic, sorry.

In my opinion OPM will always be there - Filipinos will always love and will relate to beautiful love songs may it be classic way orig Pinoy them songs, rock, rb or accoustics - the messenger or the singer is what were short in excitement, interesting or X-FACTOR. I would say that the blame maybe with the no brains behind the artists or picking the proper artist and the materials - maybe the producers or managers. One example are the judges and people behind the X FACTOR PHILS - Kadebon, Allen, Modesto, all groups - they are all pathetic and mediocre - I dont know why they picked the wrong possible future big x-factor singer/performer??? ALL must be possible winner and if u dont need ur head examined you wont think for a second that those pathetic names can be in the same music industry as Regine, Sarah, Beyonce, Adele, One Direction - to name a few. ONE BIG BLAME are the people behind the shows, records or producers. In my humble opinion.

if you call people pathetic then ur not that humble nor is ur opinion. Just because you dont like the artist eh wala na silang x factor. FYI regine took years para mapasikat after manalo siya sa tawag ng tanghalan. She even need to change her name at i repackage para lang mapansin uli ng tao. And i bet there are people who also called her pathetic and mediocre too. Ang mahirap dito sa industry na ito people are judged first by their looks and not their talent. Pero there are exceptions at yon ang hinahanap ng isang show. To find someone unconventional yung hindi nagpifit sa karaniwang mold of what a star should be. Kung lahat sila mga mukhang star sa unang tingin they wouldnt even need a contest para sumikat. They would be discover right away. So are they mediocre? maybe. but pathetic? far from it. So did the judges make a mistake? masyado pang maaga para sabihin yan.

true. i used to co manage Pinoy bands pero hirap magkaron ng airplay sa radio stations unless malaki ang lagay sa DJs. they'd rather play foreign music and not care for unknown Pinoy bands starting out.

Tsk tsk tsk...

Nakaka-disappoint, yung government ng korea Ni-remodel ang olympic hall to a k-pop concert hall, at planong mag-open ng kpop academy, tingin ko kailangan lang natin ng new opm sound, remember yung mandopop dating tunog traditional until jay chou put an rnb rythm and mix it with the ethnic sound, sa kpop naman hindi naman dating electropop ang tunog nila seo taiji boys lang ang nagsimula. Opm kasi aminin natin wala tayong sariling tunog puro may touch ng pagka-western. Kailangan natin ng unique sound.
