Do you think Lucy Liu's comments were racist?

In her October 11 interview on the The Late Night Show With David Letterman, Lucy Liu commented that she doesn't want to get dark skin from running outdoors because she would "look a little Filipino."

Her comments became a hot topic among Netizens. Some argue that the Charlie's Angels star sounded racist, while others dismiss it as just Lucy's way of saying it would look awkward for a Chinese girl to look like a person from a different race.

In a message to Philippine Daily Inquirer's Ruben V. Nepales, she apologized for her now-controversial comment. She said: “I am so sorry that my comment was taken out of context, as I would never insult another group or ethnicity."

Lucy is of Chinese descent and, on this video of her interview, reveals she practices the Filipino martial art kali-arnis-silat.

Kali or arnis is the Filipino martial art of fighting with sticks. Variations of this martial art depend on a region or province where this art is practiced. Some combine sticks with knives, machete, or swords, while other systems of kali incorporate the use of umbrellas, fans, and horse whip.

At the latter part of the video, she said she doesn't want to be mistaken as a Filipino and sometimes, she also looks like a Mexican when the weather is too hot.
