Cinemanila 2008 awarding at Malacañang Palace

Dekada Cinemanila announced its winners during the October 20 awarding ceremony at Rizal Hall of Malacañang Palace. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo handed out the bulol trophies for the winners for this year's edition.

Producer Arleen Cuevas (rightmost) is all-smiles as she posed with President GMA and showed off her award. The bulol trophy depicts the Ifugao rice god holding up a film reel. According to Cinemanila, the presence of the bulol ensures a good harvest and paired with the symbol of film, it becomes the icon for a bumper crop of excellent Filipino films.

Glaiza de Castro, one of the stars of Ang Manghuhula, was present during the awarding ceremony. Her film was one of six Digital Lokal entries that competed in the tenth anniversary of Cinemanila.

YES! Magazine's executive editor Pete Lacaba Jr. accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award from PGMA. As a screenplay writer, he is credited for writing some of the best Philippine films produced such as Jaguar, Orapronobis, Bayan Ko, and Sister Stella L. His citation goes: "His strong voice in the scripts brought out the best in artists and were applauded by the public abroad and at home."

In his speech, Direk Tikoy Aguiluz reminsced that ten years ago, they initially had problems choosing a locally produced film that could compete with other Asian films. Now, the Cinemanila organizers are having difficulty trimming down the list of Filipino films to include in various sections.
