It was a night of glitz and glamour during the awarding ceremony of the 34th Metro Manila Film Festival. The brief ceremony was held last December 27 at the Harbor Tent of Hotel Sofitel, CCP complex, Pasay City.

The night's big winner was the MMFF entry Baler, which bagged 10 trophies given out by the MMFF Executive Committee. These include (from left) Best Festival Supporting Actor for Phillip Salvador, Best Director for Mark Meily, and Best Festival Actress for Anne Curtis.

During her acceptance speech, Anne Curtis happily noted that this award is the first acting recognition she has received in her 12 years in show business. In the movie Baler, she plays the role of Feliza, daughter of a Filipino rebel, who falls in love with a half-Spanish soldier (Jericho Rosales).

This acting trophy is also historical for Phillip Salvador since the movie Baler is his comeback film after seven years. He is recognized as Best Festival Supporting Actor for his role as Nanding, the father of Feliza (Anne Curtis) in the historical film set during the 18th century.

Baler director Mark Meily candidly said that he was not expecting to win any trophies that night. "Kaya lang po nang nanalo na yung mga kasamahan ko, nagsulat na rin po ako ng speech...just in case," he confessed. When the night ended, Baler earned the Best Festival Director Award, the Best Festival Cinematography Award (for Lee Meily), the Gatpuno Villegas Cultural Award and the Most Gender Sensitive Award.
