At the Green Point Stadium—also called Cape Town Stadium—in Cape Town, South Africa, the lovey-dovey couple had no qualms about PDAs, or public display of affection, while watching the football match between Italy and Paraguay on June 14. The match, by the way, ended in a draw, with both teams scoring one goal each.

It's Derek who is the big football fan, but Angelica has made an effort to bone up on the rules of the game. "Four years ko siyang inaral," Angelica (who provides the running commentary to the photos on this and the following pages) says with a laugh. "Pero may mga questions pa rin ako. ‘Bakit ganito? Bakit ganyan?' Pero siyempre, pangit naman manood nang live na wala kang idea, di ba?"

In the Philippines, perhaps owing to our history of American colonization, what the rest of the world knows as football is better known as soccer. To Filipinos, the word football usually conjures up images of men in helmets fighting over an almond-shaped ball-in other words, American football.

The tickets in the hands of Angelica and Derek were for the Italy-Paraguay face-off. The two joined thousands of fans who trooped to the stadium to watch the game. Angelica tells us they bought their tickets in advance, when they were still in the Philippines.

The Italy-Paraguay face-off was the first-ever live football match that the Pinoys watched, and they immersed themselves in the experience. All of them were actually rooting for England because Derek's father is British.

Before going to the match between England and Algeria on June 18, the Pinoy group went shopping for red and white wigs—a Mohawk for Angelica, an Afro for Derek. They also bought face paint, scarves, beanie hats, and the English flag. "Nagpunta kami sa isang mall," Angelica says. "Namili talaga kami. Nag-shopping kami para 'pag game na, ready kami!"

The England-Algeria duel, by the way, ended in a draw with a score of 0-0.

"Si Derek ang nag-face-paint sa 'kin," says Angelica.

For the England-Algeria match, she wore her England jacket and England scarf, while Derek wore his matching England jacket and beanie hat.

The two shelled out around P60,000 each for the two matches they watched in the stadium. "Nasa first layer kami no'ng box," she says, revealing how close they were to the football field.

After each game, the streets outside the stadium and the fan parks were packed with eager fans still high with energy. "Kapag galing ka sa live game, medyo mahirap nang pumarty," says Angelica. "Kasi ma-traffic na. So, ginagawa namin, nagpa-park kami sa malayo, 'tapos lalakarin na lang namin 'yon hanggang sa makarating kami sa stadium. So, paglabas namin, hindi na kami naiipit sa traffic."

Aside from the Green Point Stadium, where they watched two games live, the couple and their friends also went to fan parks, which were outdoor venues with large screens set up for football fans to watch the games for free.

"Sa fan park, libre lang, pero pipila ka nang matagal. Pag puno na siya, 'sinasara talaga... Sa fan park, mas wild 'yong mga tao. Sa stadium, seryoso 'yong mga tao, e. Mas tense, and medyo bawal mag-wild, kasi may mga guards talaga, may security. Pero sa fan park, nando'n 'yong nagkakagulo talaga, may mga away."

Derek Ramsay was born in England to a British father and a Filipina mother, so it's understandable that he went all out in supporting the English team during the World Cup.

When England lost to Germany (4-1), resulting in England's elimination, Derek couldn't help crying. Angelica, who supported England as well, felt for her boyfriend. "Naiyak nga din ako, e," she says.

"Nag-rent kami ng house," Angel says of their living arrangements during their month-long trip. "So six kami do'n, and then 'yong three girls na sumama na friends ng friend namin, neighbor namin sila. One street away lang.

"Mga January or February this year [2010] pa lang, inayos na namin kung sa'n kami magi-stay."

Angel and Derek are each holding a vuvuzela—a long, slim horn made of plastic that makes a loud, buzzing sound.

In a poll by the London-firm translations company Today Translations, vuvuzela was voted as the word of the World Cup.

According to the company's website, www.todaytranslations.wordpress.com, the word was chosen by 75 percent of more than 320 linguists from over 60 countries, who were asked to choose the word with the biggest impact on the tournament.

Vuvuzela beat the words Jabulani, Waka, and Zakumi. The word jabulani means "to celebrate" in Zulu, one of South Africa's 11 official languages, and Adidas Jabulani is the brand name of the official World Cup ball.

Waka comes from the title of the official World Cup Song, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)," sung by the Colombian singer Shakira, featuring the South African band Freshlyground.

Zakumi is the name of the official World Cup mascot, a green-haired leopard.

Angelica, Derek, and four of their friends spent a night at the Inverdoorn Game Reserve and Safari Lodge before they went out on a safari. The game reserve, Angelica says, is three hours away from Cape Town.

"Masarap 'yong pagkain," Angelica says of South Africa's exotic cuisine. "'Yong crocodile, parang lasang chicken. Medyo kailangan mo lang piliin talaga, kasi 'yong iba, medyo walang lasa."

On a different day, the couple also dined at La Colombe, ranked No. 12 in the S. Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants and crowned best restaurant in South Africa.

The lovebirds ate at Mama Africa, a restaurant in Cape Town that serves authentic South African dishes.

Angelica enthuses: "Kumain kami ng crocodile, ng ostrich, ng kudu—para siyang deer. Then 'yong springbok-parang kambing na pag tumatalon, parang may spring sa paa. 'Yon 'yong national animal nila doon."

Angel is talking about the Mama's Wild Game Mixed Grill (pic), which the website www.dining-out.co.za describes as a dish of kudu, ostrich, crocodile, springbok, and venison sausage. The actress doesn't eat dark meat like pork and beef, but says she broke her rule during this particular vacation.

"Ito, first time umaraw, kaya talagang lumabas kami," Angelica says of these photos of her and Derek playing Frisbee on the beach.

"Sobrang lamig kasi do'n, winter nila. Kaya ang saya namin no'ng nagkaaraw. Si Derek nga, naghubad talaga ng T-shirt. Pero medyo malamig pa din." Derek is a Frisbee enthusiast, and has several injuries to prove it.

Derek and Angelica show off their tandem jump certificates, which say: "This is to certify that Angelica Panganiban [Derek Ramsay] has made a tandem jump with the Western Province Sport Parachute Club from a Cessna 206 T aircraft at a height of 11,000 ft above Robertson, South Africa on the 12th day of June 2010."

Angelica says she only became adventurous because of her boyfriend of three years. "Nahawa lang ako sa kanya talaga," she says.

"Sabi nga ni Pokwang, ‘Nagawa n'yo na lahat. Nag-swimming na kayo kasama ang shark, nag-skydiving na. Akyatin n'yo na lang ang Mount Everest.' Hahaha! Sabi ko, siguro nga. Puwede siguro 'yon!"

Derek, Meli, Marco, Alvin, Angelica, and Ditrie went cage diving at Gans Bay in Western Cape, where they swam with the Great White Sharks. This was the group's second attempt. The waves were too strong on their first try.

"Kami 'yong nakakulong," Angelica says of their close encounter with a great white shark. Meaning, they were inside a cage dropped into the sea while sharks swam around them.

The great white shark, also known as white pointer, white shark, or white death, is a large shark that can grow up to more than 20 feet and weigh up to 5,000 pounds.

The novel Jaws, and its blockbuster film adaptation by Steven Spielberg in 1975, portrayed the mammal as a vicious man-eater, but a 2004 article from the National Geographic Channel website refutes this:

"A shark's behavior while hunting a pinniped differs markedly from its demeanor as it approaches people—suggesting that the animal does not confuse surfers for seals."

A pinniped is either a seal, a sea lion, or a walrus—the preferred prey of sharks.

While waiting for the Italy-Paraguay match, Angelica, Derek, and their friends spent time at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town.

"Ito 'yong day na unang nanood kami nang live. Maaga kami na nagpupunta sa venue para nga hindi kami maipit sa mga tao. So pumasok kami sa aquarium no'ng bored na bored na kami."

"Halimbawa, may laro kinabukasan 'yong Spain and Mexico. Pag gusto namin 'yong game, pag-uusapan na namin kung magfa-fan-park kami. 'Tapos, shopping sa umaga, gano'n.

"Pero 'yong shark diving, pina-book na namin 'yon dito pa lang sa Manila. So may fixed day na talaga siya."

Angelica sneaked up on an ostrich. This is the largest bird that can't fly, but it can run up to 70 kilometers per hour. Ostriches, native to Africa, roam free at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.
