Rodolfo Vera Quizon Sr. began his career as a bodabil dancer.

He changed his first stage name Golay to Dolphy.

He was discovered, at age 19, by Fernando Poe Sr., the father of FPJ, the late Action King.

With at least 200 films to his name, Dolphy earned the title Comedy King.

Dolphy's brand of comedy was something that Filipinos could relate to. Clearly, he had the pulse on his audience and the skill and technique to create funny sketches for them.

Coming from a humble background himself, he portrayed roles championing the oppressed.

He used comedy to show little and big truths about life. 

In real life, Dolphy was a generous man. Even when he had only enough, he did not hesitate to give to those who asked.

The King of Comedy produced a huge body of work. This was recognized by several award-giving bodies.

Dolphy got Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Gawad Urian (1998), the Cinemanila International Film Festival (2000), and the Metro Manila Film Festival (2009).

For about three decades, Dolphy's tandem with Panchito (right) was immensely popular, until the latter's death on December 18, 1995.

The comic duo even had a movie with Hollywood singer Timi Yuro entitled Buhay Marino in 1967.

Directed by the late Lino Brocka, the film won critics over, with Dolphy's acting given particular notice.

One of Dolphy's favorite leading ladies in the '70s was Lotis Key.

They had 11 movies together, and were real-life lovers during that time. 

One of Dolphy's most notable projects was the longest-running and most watched primetime sitcom, John en Marsha, which spawned nine movie sequels.

His leading lady was Nida Blanca (left), who also played the daughter of Dely Atay-atayan (right).

The Dely Atay-atayan character, as Dolphy's mother-in-law, was the funny but forever kontrabida in his life.

A scene from John en Marsha showed Gabby Concepcion, who played suitor to John and Marsha's daughter Shirley (Maricel Soriano).

In 1981, Dolphy and Alma Moreno worked in the movie Titser's Pet, which started their May-December affair. 

Veteran actor Dolphy pursued young Alma Moreno and their six-year relationship bore a son, Vandolph. They separated in 1987.

The Dolphy-Alma screen tandem from 1981 to '87 produced the following films: Good Morning Professor, My Funny Valentine, TengTeng Desarapen, Nang Maghalo ang Balat sa Tinalupan, The Crazy Professor, Balimbing, and Bata-Batuta. 

Both Dolphy and Alma liked dancing and were good at it.
