Karel Marquez's oversized shades look so trendy these days. In the 1960s, large sunglasses were referred to as "Jackie O's," after Jacqueline Kennedy, the stylish former U.S. First Lady who wore them to keep her eyes hidden from the prying press.
The advice of eye experts, however, is to use sunglasses not just for fashion—but more importantly—for sun protection.
Luis Manzano wears an aviator, a classic shape popularized by Ray-Ban in the 1930s. Today, designers like Tom Ford, Ted Baker, and Valentino have also come up with their versions of aviator shades.
Sports enthusiasts like Marc Nelson are likely to choose brands like Rudy Project and Oakley for their eye wear. Performance-oriented sunglasses should be lightweight, made of a flexible and durable material such as polyamide, and have no-slip temple grips and nose pads.
Parokya ni Edgar's vocalist Chito Miranda (right) and bassist Buwi Meneses (left) wear their shades not just for sun protection, but also, as one of them puts it, "to disguise themselves." Gab Chee-Kee (center) thinks his pair of sunglasses is a hair accessory.
Just like Karel Marquez, Say Alonzo also prefers an oversized pair of sunglasses. Aside from looking fashionable with this kind of eye wear, opthalmologists say that these "big lens allow less light in."
Mitch Dulce, the fashionista in Pinoy Big Brother's house (Celebrity Edition), creates a funky fashion statement with the colored rim and odd shape of her sunglasses.
Wilma Doesnt and Angelu de Leon also go for oversized shades. Notice the interesting detail of Angelu's earstem. These logo-enhancing rhinestones, or lacy patterns, or beads, or any adornment and texture on your frame or on the temples of your eye piece are the fad of the season!
