Bela Padilla says cover photo on FHM did not mean to be "racist"

Bela Padilla tweeted, "The concept of my @FHMPhil cover was stepping out of MY inhibitions MY fears and MY shadows. Not belittling any race. :)                                                          

 

"The title provided by @FHMPhil is in connection with the article and has NOTHING to do with skin colors."

 

Were online viewers reading too much into the cover and imputing an insensitivity that wasn't there?

FHM Philippines's March 2012 cover created quite a stir last weekend when its cover photo was uploaded on the magazine's Facebook page.

Most people reacted, tagging the cover photo of GMA-7 star Bela Padilla as "racist."

The photo showed Bela, who was clad in a sexy fuschia bikini, being surrounded by black female models.

Below the cover was the blurb: "Bela Padilla: Stepping Out Of The Shadows."

The young Kapuso actress was quick to explain the cover's concept on her Twitter.

Yesterday, February 26, she tweeted, "I meant no harm with this cover. I'm so sorry to everyone who got offended. I hope all of you see the beauty of the cover and appreciate it"

She also explained the rationale behind the blurb:

"The concept of my @FHMPhil cover was stepping out of MY inhibitions MY fears and MY shadows. Not belittling any race. :)

"The title provided by @FHMPhil is in connection with the article and has NOTHING to do with skin colors.

"The girls on my cover Of @FHMPhil symbolize the different sides of ME that I have outgrown and am ready to step out of. Let's be open minded."

FHM CHANGES COVER PHOTO. The comments had the editorial of FHM giving the cover a second look.

In the end, they "decided to take the side of sensitivity," and are now changing the cover photo.

Here's the full statement of FHM Philippines released on February 27:

On Saturday, February 25, we uploaded the March issue with Bela Padilla on the cover on our Facebook page.


Just hours later, a slew of comments on the supposed "racism" of the cover image and cover line flooded the magazine page, prompting the editorial team to re-examine the cover so that we could put into context its execution and assuage the concerns of our readers and non-readers as well who've weighed in on the issue. 



We took all the points into consideration and have decided to take the side of sensitivity.



When FHM hits the stands in March it will have a different cover. We deem this to be the most prudent move in the light of the confusion over the previous cover execution.

    wag naman ganyan para sumikat lang ganyan pa ng paraan ang gagawin aba dala mo ang pangalan ng pilipinas malaking kahihiyan yan!pero di kaya karma din kc ung pang gagamit nya sa isang sikat na artista na siniraan nya para lang makilala sya anoh ba yan!.

Ang DOS nga ni hindi siya nagawang pasikatin. Sa GMA naman kung hindi pa gawan ng issue si Marian hindi siya mapapansin ng mga haters ni Marian bwahahaa

    racist ang cover na ito. And im not a bela hater. FHM should never release this cover wala akong pakialam kung malugi pa sila. Title pa lang racist na tapos tingnan nyo yung mga models nakatingin sa kanya na parang hangang hanga sa kulay niyang maputi. This is offensive and shows the height of superficiality. Kulang sa sensibility ang mga editors ng magazine na ito. I don't expect them to have good taste pero naman.

    redsand si Floyd Mayweather papansin lang iyan maski asawa niya eh binugbog. Did you watch the ESPN on how Magic Johnson admire Jeremy Lin the new Asian American NBA star? Hopefully most Filipino Americans can also penetrate the NBA soon. On the other hand, pagtuonan natin ng pansin ang discrimination sa Pinas sa mga fast food, dept stores, movie industry, etc. Mostly ang nahahire ay mga maputi at ang mga hindi kagandahan or kaputian ay DH or chimay. Dito sa US ang MCDo hinahire nila kahit mentally challenged or disable.

    ...She's making a FOOL out of herself ... I prefer her to wear CLASSIC and MODERN. It should look TRENDY. Sexy look is not for her, just like to look presentable and at the same time be a HEAD-TURNER, but in a CLASSY way, not the sexy way ... just my 2 cents ... thanks... It's just right that FHM changed the cover do a different Bela. I hope this time, it is for everybody to watch with a HUGE --- whoa! Now you're TALKING!!!

    kahit gumimik at pag usapan pa yang cover ni belat wala pa rin bibili..ayusin naman ng fhm yung pag photoshopped nila ng di halata ...kitang kita yung korte ng silicon

    tutuo pala yang cover ni belat sa fhm,i thought people are msking fun of her fsce ,na nilagay lang yung head sa body..halata kasing photoshopped...may pag ka jinx talaga etong si belat..as usuall nandito uli no 1 fan ng dongyan na si astraunat aka i am brainless...susme fhm bagsak ni belat akala ko ba bawal sa religion nila yan ..grabe alipusta nila kay janna domingo dati ,tapos dyan din pala bagsak nya astraunat eng eng ka talaga ,father ni belat british ,tatay ni mr spanis..layo ng kaibahan ng salitang english at spanish...esep esesp use ur coconut shell

    Wala na kasing bumibili ng FHM dahil sa walang kwentang content, unless sale sa Booksale, hahaha... kaya kailangan nila ng pauso. Kaya ayan, racist cover kuno ang pinapalabas ng FHM para mapag-usapan sila. Hindi din naman kasi bebenta ang magazine kung ang cover mo eh starlet na di naman sikat. True enough, the controversy created some form of buzz... Ika nga, bad publicity is still publicity.

    I showed this photo to a black female and male friend. the Female said what made it racist is the 'stepping out of the shadows' na title. she immediately thought of having the blacks as the shadow, which to her is offensive. she said kung wala daw siguro yung stepping out of the shadow or maybe it was a different title, she would see it in a more artistic way. The Male black friend of mine said, right away, she looks ok but no offense I think this is photoshopped. Second comment, what are the black women doing around her. He didn't even notice the title LOL. entonses, pag mga male mags, there is no artistic value whatsoever, at being that men are mostly one track mind when it comes to the content, walang open mind open mind... iba ang inoopen nila pag bumibili ng ganitong klaseng mags LOL
