When you're starting to represent your country, you are an ambassadress of goodwill and you should understand that. We are there to promote beauty...not just beauty but we should unite each other as one," says Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez.

(CLICK HERE to read related story.)

Pinag-usapan sa nakaraang Miss Universe ang sagot ni Venus sa tanong ng judge na si William Baldwin: "What is one big mistake that you made in your life and what did you do to make it right?"

"For me, you know, when I ran away from home and then I realized that without a mom, I always make a lot of mistakes in life. So, that is the time that I realized that my mother is so important beside me," ang confident na sagot ni Melanie.

FUNNY REMARKS. Nakilala rin si Melanie dahil sa kanyang nakatutuwang English remarks, gaya ng "Don't judge my brother because he is not a book;" "Why should I have a calling card, I'm not a call girl" and "I don't eat meat, I'm not a carnival."

Sinasadya niya ba ang pagsasalita ng ganoon?

"Natural yun," sagot ni Melanie.

Dinepensahan din ni Melanie ang nakatutuwang sagot niya sa question-and-answer portion sa Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant noong 1979: "I won't change my legs. Because I'm contented with my long-legged."

"Kasi naman, 15 [years old] lang ako," sabi ni Melanie. "Nung tinanong sa akin ni Eddie Mercado [host] na, 'Are you willing to change your legs with the one million insured legs of Angie Dickinson [American actress]?' Sabi ko, 'No, because I'm contented with my long-legged'. Pero win pa rin, di ba?"

MORE BEAUTY PAGEANT QUESTIONS.

"Because she has this personality and I'm so impressed with the way she carried herself sa Miss Universe.

"Yung kanyang question is very personal.

"You know what, marunong namang mag-English 'yang mga 'yan [ibang candidates from other countries]. Nag-i-interpreter...gumagamit sila ng mga ganyan para magkaroon sila ng a lot of time para makapag-isip. Tapos pag matalino pa yung kanyang nakuha [interpreter], pinapaganda yung phrase."
