For the first time ay magdidirek ng isang opera musical play ang award-winning film/TV director and actress na si Direk Laurice Guillen.

Cecilia’s Hall ng St. Scholastica’s College sa Manila, produced by Lyric Opera of the Philippines.

Ang description ng character ng Carmen: “A woman like no other – you can love her, hate her, but you will never forget her.”

“I did that na kasi with Johnny [Delgado], and I directed my other daughter Ina. So, this is the first time I’m directing Ana, in theater and in any medium.

“But she’s been my student sa [acting] workshop.

"So, as far as I’m concerned, it’s nothing new to me. But as far as she’s concerned, siguro, naninibago or nag-a-adjust pa talaga, although she’s also an acting coach now.

“But you know, this is her first time to work with her mom. She never worked with her father. So, this is her first time niya to work with a parent.”

Kinakabahan ba si Ana?

“Aba, ewan ko sa kanya.”

Ano ba ang kuwento ng Carmen?

Carmen is about a gypsy girl, she is known even among the gypsies with her fast movement; whenever she likes a man, she makes the move, she’s very passionate.

“She’s working in a factory, so this is really a working class character. She falls in love with a soldier, he’s young and is brought up upright by his mother but of course, bumigay siya sa seduction ni Carmen.

“They fall in love. But then, as a soldier, he’s supposed to guard her, he has to set her free, so, he had to go to prison. Then, afterwards, they meet again. Pero si Don Jose, unlike Carmen, he responds to his call of duty pa rin.

She’s completely free. There is conflict about this.

Wala siyang choice kundi sumama.

"In the mean time, na-in love si Carmen sa isa pang lalaki, si Escamillo. Hindi ito matanggap ni Don Jose.

“So, it’s a triangle. Very familiar story ito sa atin. Sumama pa rin siya kay Escamillo, and sabi niya, ‘Kung gusto mo, patayin mo na lang ako,’ Parang ‘Over my dead body! Malaya akong ipinanganak, malaya akong mamamatay.

“May pagka-fatalistic siya. Ito namang isa, out of despair, piñata siya. Crime of passion.

“This is one of the most popular operas in the world. This has been adapted in film, television…

“Associated kasi sila with the school. Camille teaches there. And also because, the Sta Cecilia’s Hall sa StScho, ang ganda-gandang venue, ha! Malaki, maganda… Para siyang mini-Cultural Center of the Philippines!

“It also has a reputation in music and it has perfect acoustics so dito, magagawa nila’ng gusto nila.

They have 40-piece orchestra.
