Tanghalang Pilipino adds Pinoy humor to children's musical "Mulan"

As its second offering for the 21st theater season,Tanghalang Pilipino presents a children's musical that will surely delightyoung people of all ages—Mulan!

The resident theater group of the Cultural Center of thePhilippines will stage this colorful children's play until October 7 at the CCPTanghalang Aurelio Tolentino. See the spectacular adventures of the legendarycharacter Hua Mulan, the heroine who joined an all-male army to fight for the honor of her family and country.

In theepic tale of Mulan, wars are fought not just by men but by thegods as well. The production showcases spectacular and innovative stagingtechniques, and features a brilliant choreography that fuses elements ofmartial arts and original music inspired by Oriental traditions.

Palancaaward-winning playwright Rody Vera writes the production's libretto andrecreates for the stage an original musical that illustrates convention-defyingbravery and courage.

Jude Edgard Balsamo's music, inspired by Orientaltraditions, is reminiscent of Chinese operas. The mystical charm of hissweeping melodies, combined with Jonjon Villareal's skillful lighting design,sets the tone of the production.

Mulan features premier dance artist DenisaReyes's brilliant choreography that fuses elements of martial arts. Themusical showcases spectacular and innovative staging techniques under the direction of Dennis Marasigan. New York trained designer Gino Gonzales'whimsical set pieces and costumes add a fascinating dimension to theproduction.

Based on thefamous Chinese poem, "Ballad of Mulan," Mulan tells the story of asimple young woman who, despite her ordinary life, overcame extraordinarycircumstances and was hailed for her greatness. Mulan features theTanghalang Pilipino Actors' Company in this musical that is perfect forchildren and the young at heart, musical theater enthusiasts and for those whosimply want to get in touch with their Asian roots.
