Marc Abaya on starring in stage play Closer: "I think it's a great opportunity for me to push myself."

Movie and television (and now theater) actor Marc Abaya considers appearing in his first stage play, Red Turnip's Closer, a humbling experience.

He said, "It's very humbling... but, I think it's a great opportunity for me to push myself.

"So I'm grateful na pinagbigyan ako ng Red Turnip; binigyan ako ng opportunities.

"Kasi alam kong marami pa akong kailangang matutunan... dahil sa project na ito, na babad na babad kami."

Marc is thankful for the positive response given him and his co-actors, namely Cris Villonco, Bart Guingona, and Angel Aquino.

Like Marc, Angel is also starring in a professional theatrical production for the first time.

He told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) after the October 11 show at White Space, Pasong Tamo Ext., Makati City:

"[Doing theater] is something new to me. The last time [I appeared in a play] was in early college: Shakespeare's Twelfth Night."

In Closer, Marc plays Dan, the obsessed lover of Angel Aquino's character, Anna.

"Pero ito, iba, kasi babad na babad," repeatedly described Marc of the role given to him.

For its initial venture, new theater company Red Turnip chose to stage an original work, Closer, by English playwright Patrick Marber.

It is the play from which the 2004 Hollywood film, Closer, by Mike Nichols, was based. The movie version starred Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Julia Roberts.

It tells of the intertwining lives of four adults—Dan, Anna, Alice, and Larry—over the course of four and a half years, in this densely plotted, stinging look, at modern love and betrayal.

The play is described as focusing on "the complex relationships, politics and morality of four people trading partners in search of love and lust."

How close is Marc to the character he portrayed in the play?

"To Dan? Ako, yung 'hugot,' yung dating ako, nu'ng bata pa ako.

"Dan is complicated, cause he's 35 [years old], e. Yung asal niya, asal-bata," he pointed out.

The vocalist-thurned-thespian added: "So, how do you make a 35-year old act like a 14-year old?"

Has Marc matured emotionally since then?

"Oo, but [the child in me] is still there," he said.

"It's there everyday, oo... tapos, umiiba, dahil sa theater; umiiba, dahil sa crowd."

Marc also revealed he had a wonderful time bonding with his co-actors, theater stalwarts, Cris and Bart; and fellow newbie, Angel.

"Yes, it was a great time we had, and if only for that, I would love to do theater on a regular basis, hopefully," he enthused.

Closer runs until October 27, 2013 at the White Space, Makati City.

Venue: Whitespace, 2314 Chino Roces Avenue Extension (formerly Pasong Tamo Extension), Makati City.
