“For theater, you know, you got to work with different people, it’s a different culture, it’s a different breed of artists.
“And with TV, there are also different kinds of artists and you know, I got to learn from both worlds,” saad ni Nikki nang makapanayam ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) at ibang miyembro ng entertainment media sa launching ng naturang musical play sa Palm Grove, Rockwell Makati.
THE JOY OF THEATER.
“How do I differentiate? I guess the basics, TV is very minimal ang movement dahil mata lang ay puwede mo nang i-deliver ang kuwento.
“With this, it’s a musical, yung songs and mas malayo yung tao.
“So, I guess ibang klaseng effort yung nire-require niya. But both are equally challenging, both are equally tiring, both are equally fulfilling,” pag-aanalisa niya.
“So, I mean, that to me is secondary na lang.
CHARACTER. Ito na ang ikatlong paglabas ni Nikki sa 9 Works Theatrical na siyang maghahatid ng The Last Five Years. Prior to this play, tinampukan din niya ang Sweet Charity at They’re Playing Our Song.
Paano niya idi-describe ang character niya sa The Last Five Years?
Detalye niya, “Si Cathy ay… she’s a struggling actress and ano siya, she is insecure but she is also very loving. And so, yes, mapapanood natin yung journey niya as a partner.”
Tugon niya, “Actually oo, marami. Because she’s a theater actress and so, even the struggles that she went through like auditioning, not getting in and all of these insecurities about her boyfriend being or husband being very successful…
“She has to give up her own journey for it, parang I think, it’s something that we’ve all gone through.
FEAR OF REJECTION.
Hindi naman maliit pa ako… because before I used to do VTRs.
“I would audition for like musicals or commercials and I mean like, one out of fifty times…
“O kung makukuha man ako, extra… or yung likod ko lang or balikat ko lang ang makikita.
“So, mayroon akong ganoong issue na, you know, you worked so hard for something, you want something so much and you give it your best and then it’s not for you.
“So for me, parang I’m living by the, ‘If it’s for you, it’s for you,’ kind of thing.”
ART IMITATES LIFE? Did she channel her experience with Billy Crawford for this play?
“You know, had I been with some other partner, I probably would have used that. I mean, it’s just… I wouldn’t say I used it, because then that would be Nikki on stage and not Cathy.
“They still have very different experiences and she still dealt with things differently, kompara the way I would deal with things,” aniya.
“Maybe the hurt gave me that maturity to handle the role, the experience gave me the maturity, e. The fact that I walked in a relationship equipped me to handle Cathy’s character.
“Nakakatawa kasi, like, when I heard about this musical, we were still… a… I was still in a relationship.
“So, it’s just funny how things work out and you know, I don’t want to question that. Hindi ko naman, it’s not something that I would want for myself, you know.
“So, that’s how it is and you just take things that are given to you and just, you know…
“It was such a beautiful song, I mean, even if… kahit siguro hindi ko pinagdaanan iyong pinagdaanan ko, kakantahin ko pa rin siya.
“Simply because it has such a nice melody and I know a lot of people who have gone through it and so it just gives a voice to a…”
Pero hindi ito in anyway related?
“I mean, that’s the thing with being a TV personality. Because even your personal life, everything can be connected to it e, everything can be traced back to it, e.
“So, hindi naman sa, not that it’s unfair, it’s just, parang lahat ng tao ite-trace back to it. And posible namang iba ang pinaghuhugutan ko for it, so that’s art.”
