Filipino novelist Gina Apostol wins 2022 Rome Prize in Literature

Gina Apostol, a Filipina author based in the U.S., is awarded the prestigious Rome Award in Literature for her book in progress about Paz Pardo de Tavera, wife of Filipino artist Juan Luna, who killed her in Paris in 1892.

Isang U.S.-based Filipino writer ang pinarangalan ng prestihiyosong award sa literatura ng isang American institution na base sa Italya.

Ginawaran si Gina Apostol ng 2022-2023 Rome Prize in Literature ng American Academy sa Rome, Italy.

Ang award ni Gina ay para sa isinusulat niyang nobela na pinamagatang The Treatment of Paz.

Kasama sa napanalunan ni Gina ay “stipend, workspace, and room and board” sa 11-acre campus sa Rome, para maasikaso niya ang kanyang current novel.

Magsisimula ang paninirahan ni Gina sa American Academy sa September 2022.

Ang kanyang novel in progress ay tungkol kay Maria de la Paz Pardo de Tavera, kilala sa tawag na Paz, asawa ng Filipino painter na si Juan Luna.

Si Paz ay pinatay ni Juan sa Paris, France, noong 1892.

Si Gina ay nakasulat na ng mga nobela at kasalukuyang nagtatrabaho bilang isang English teacher sa Ethical Culture Fieldston School sa New York City.

Ukol sa American Academy sa Rome, ito ang “America’s oldest overseas center for independent studies in advanced research in the arts and humanities,” ayon sa Johns Hopkins University website.

Ang mga winners sa Rome Prize ay taunang pinipili ng independent juries na binubuo ng mga kapita-pitagang artists at scholars sa pamamagitan ng isang national competition.

Si Gina ay lumaki sa Tacloban, Leyte, at nagtapos sa University of the Philippines.

Natapos niya ang kanyang Master’s Degree in Creative writing sa Johns Hopkins University.

Ang mga naisulat niyang nobela ay ang Bibliolepsy, Insurrecto, The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata, Gun Dealers’ Daughter, at ang La Tercera na ilalabas sa January 2023.

Para sa The Treatment of Paz, nagpaplano si Gina na puntahan ang mga lugar na pinuntahan at tinirhan nina Juan Luna at Paz.

Sinabi rin niyang matatagalan pa bago niya matapos ang libro.

Ano naman ang kahalagahan ng Rome Award for literature para kay Gina?

Aniya, may mga Filipino authors ang nagawaran ng international awards.

Nakikita raw ni Gina ang halaga ng kanyang mga ginagawa kapag may mga Pilipinong lumalapit sa kanya at proud na mabasa na sentro ng kuwento ay Pilipino.

“The readers that come to my readings always say it’s so good to hear about the Philippines being centered in a book.

“To hear the voice of the Filipino, especially the voice of the Filipino woman.”
