Family members of Francis Magalona are thankful that the memory of the Master Rapper will be revived through a stage musical.

For the first quarter of 2016, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) will be staging a musical inspired by the songs of the “King of Pinoy Hip-Hop.”

This musical, titled Three Stars and a Sun, is expected to open in March 2016, in time for Francis M.'s 7th death anniversary.

It will be PETA’s closing presentation for the 47th season.

In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), Elmo expressed his gratitude towards the people who are paying tribute to Francis M.’s legacy through a musical.

The son of Francis M. told PEP, “Hindi na-expect na gagawa sila ng...it’s kind of a musical tribute, e, para kay Papa.

"Natutuwa ako na nagkaroon sila ng idea/concept to make a play ‘tapos gagamitin nila songs ni Papa.

“Kasi alam ko talagang maraming humahanga sa kanya and maraming may alam ng kanta niya so I’m sure maraming makaka-appreciate sa play na yo’n.”

Pia Magalona, Elmo’s mom and Francis M.’s wife, is also grateful to PETA for creating a musical to honor the late Master Rapper of OPM.

She told PEP, “Of course, I was moved by their gesture and also honored that they recognized Francis’ songwriting.

“And of course, when we were writing the songs back in the day, we wrote it mostly for ourselves, to speak to ourselves as we’re bringing up our family.

“Later on, of course as he matured, it was his way of sharing our ideals.

“This [is] what we wish, we hope for the country, for the citizenship of the country, and in bringing up a family.

“So we’re just really family based and it’s really good if people, you know like, sometimes we will see Francis’ writings in school books and text books even when he was alive.

“So he was already honored by that and when you see that, it’s an affirmation that there are some people who would like to continue your ideals.

“We just really like everything positive and productive for our people so, mostly I’m honored and moved by the gesture.”

Currently, the musical is being developed by PETA with Pia being tapped as one of their creative consultants for Three Stars and a Sun.

Pia said, “They presented me the story line and then I liked it.

“We all know that Francis’ songs are like social commentary so it has something to do with that.

“So I’m on board but the details are not out yet but so far, that’s it.

“And I approved the songs that they’re going to be using.

“That’s as much as I’m part of it but the rest of it, I leave them all the creative process.

“And then, they just come back to me later maybe if there are some things that, on behalf of Francis, I would have to approve.

“But mostly, that would be okay but it’s just all formalities.”

PETA is currently holding auditions for the cast members of Three Stars and a Sun.

Elmo said that he’s open to audition but would love to see a different actor’s perspective on the character.

He said, “Actually hindi ko pa nakikita yung buong istorya, e, but I’m full on supporting it kasi siyempre, alam ko yung music ni Papa.

“I know my Dad so well pero to be honest, kung ako mismo tatanungin, gusto ko rin makita yung perspective ng iba kung papaano nila gagawin yung play.”
