Karel Marquez was originally offered to star in TV5’s remake of Panday.
However, the actress had to decline the offer since she already agreed to play play Anastasia Steele in the Philippine run of 50 Shades! The Musical Parody.
In an exclusive interview with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal), Karel disclosed, “I was supposed to be in Panday, [specifically] the Bangs Garcia role."
She only learned about the TV offer after she accepted the role in the musical.
“I was supposed to be in Panday but I got this role already after Viva called. Oh my God, nagre-rehearse na kami, sayang. But I’m very happy that I’m here because it’s a very different experience. It’s a good exposure na rin.
“Ibang side, so I had TV, I have this, so why not go back to theatre. I can go back to TV anytime. I would have accepted TV5 if I didn’t have this. It’s very unprofessional to back out din. I just give it a go.
“But I was hoping Panday, ako kontrabida pero okay lang. In God’s time. He has other plans for me. ‘Diyan ka muna, enjoy ka sa theatre.’”
E.L. James' bestselling book Fifty Shades of Grey is the inspiration for this laugh-out-loud musical that will show Karel in a different light.
Expect her to carry a whip, be blindfolded, and more.
According to Karel, “You have to watch it.”
The musical is her first time to be back in theater after playing wholesome roles on stage such as Gabriella in High School Musical and Belle in Beauty and the Beast.
50 Shades! The Musical Parody features international and Filipino theater performers. How is it like working with a foreign cast, especially the men who are half-naked most of the time during the entirety of the play?
“The guys are all nice and comfortable to work with. Normal lang sa kanila sometimes they wear sando, naka ganun lang sando nila. Very liberated sila, taga-States. Nasanay na ako in a way, walang ilangan,” said Karel during the press conference held recently at Crowne Plaza Hotel.
“In a way, it’s my first time working with foreigners. Technically, truthfully, they’re liberated talaga. Ako, oh my gosh! But it’s a learning experience for me. This is actually one of the fun plays I’ve been doing. So far it’s good. Wala naman masyadong naghuhubad, nothing really vulgar like the movie. That’s why I accepted it. Parang I’m like a princess pero bastos yung mga [ginagamit na] words.”
What made her accept a very edgy and sexual role as Anastacia Steele?
“Now is the right time since I ended my soap, and then I got a call [asking] if I could audition, sabi 50 Shades.
“Oh my God, ano yun? No way! I know the movie. I watched the movie. No, no, no. I need to check it out first, see the material. It’s a parody, comedy daw. Maganda yung music, parang Disney-themed. It’s funny. So when I looked at the material, sobrang nakakatawa nga. It’s totally different from the movie. Parang ginagaya namin siya but it’s not totally like that. We’re making fun of it. It’s really, really fun and new. I’m of age, I’m 30 already. It’s fun.”
What will audiences expect and realize when they watch 50 Shades! The Musical Parody?
“Everyone has a naughty side. There’s a naughty side inside of us. You’ll end up really laughing and talking about the play afterwards. It’s a totally different experience for Manila.”
“We have an inner goddess inside us. We all have that. You’ll embrace yourself more as a woman.”
50 Shades! The Musical Parody is presented by Vivre Fort Entertainment and 9 Works Theatrical. Opening night is on February 12 at the Carlos P. Romulo Theatre at RCBC Plaza, Makati. Tickets are now available at SM Tickets, Ticketworld and Ticketnet outlets.
