Sister Act The Musical is being staged until July 9, 2017 at The Theatre at Solaire.

Don’t expect to sing along to “I Will Follow Him” during Sister Act the musical, now being staged by the international tour group at The Theatre at Solaire.

The musical, with original music composed by multi-award-winning Alan Menken, is based on the story of the popular 1990s movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, but it is set in the late 1970s Philadelphia.

Although the upbeat song “I Will Follow Him” is not included in the lineup, there are plenty of humorous moments in the Manila staging.

Deloris Van Cartier (Dene Hill) brings life anew to the character popularized by Whoopi in the film version.

She seeks refuge in The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith headed by Mother Superior (Rebecca Mason-Wygal) after she witnesses a murder committed by her syndicate-boss boyfriend Curtis Jackson (Brandon Godfrey).

Jo McCrory, General Manager of Broadway Entertainment Group, says: “Alan Menken composed an original score that has a very Motown sound. It is so immersive, you can get lost in the music.”

From among the songs, she says that Fabulous Baby is her favorite because “it’s really fun. I was brought up in the '70s.”

The set is based on the Broadway and West End designs, and it is the set from the first national tour in the U.S. “We had to make some modifications for the tour. It’s basically the same but modified to travel well and fit in.”

Audiences who will watch the 2.5-hour performance will basically be watching the same Broadway show, with a live orchestra.

The international tour previously performed in Singapore. It is a very big international production, with cast and crew mostly from the U.S., but some crew members are from the Philippines. “They’re thrilled to be coming and playing here back ‘home,’” McCrory says.
