"StarStruck" graduates will act for Tanghalang Pilipino

StarStruck graduates Ryza Cenon (left) and Mike Tan (right) will take part in Tanghalang Pilipino's production titled Kutsilyo, Pamaypay at Yantok. Marky Cielo (inset) was also slated to star in the play but he died before he could complete the project.

Mark Herras was supposed to take part in a theatrical production of Tanghalang Pilipino but due to his hectic schedule, he could not squeeze in time to regularly attend rehearsals. Marky Cielo was also in the lineup of the play but his early demise prompted the production staff to tap his alternate, Jonathan Tadioan, to portray the role of Ibarra.

For this reason, only Ryza Cenon and Mike Tan will be part of the period play titled Kutsilyo, Pamaypay, at Yantok. The two StarStruck graduates were handpicked by Tanghalang Pilipino artistic director Fernando "Nanding" Josef to be part of the group's first offering for 2009. Mr. Josef, who serves as the acting coach of GMA Artist Center, used to mentor Ryza and Mike during their previous acting workshops. Ryza and Mike started rehearsing for the play last December 2008.

Kutsilyo, Pamaypay, at Yantok is a collaboration between Tanghalang Pilipino Actors' Company and GMA-7 Talent Center. It is a trilogy of classic scene studies that probe deeper into the characters of Maria Clara, Salome and Sisa, and the men in their lives, Ibarra, Elias and Pedring, respectively. It is composed of three episodes, including Chris Millado's "Ang Nazarena" and "Kabanata X," and Nicolas Pichay's "Ang Balutan ng Gamot at Pagkain."

The first episode, "Ang Balutan ng Gamot at Pagkain," parodies the usually dramatic characterization of Maria Clara and Ibarra. The second episode, "Kabanata X,"is a tender scene between Elias and Salome. "Ang Nazarena," the third and final episode, is a violent scene that dramatizes the physical and mental torture that Sisa suffers in the hands of her abusive husband and that leads to the complete loss of her sanity.

The all-Tagalog play approximately runs for one hour and fifteen minutes.

It will be staged under the direction of Tess Jamias at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute until January 16, 2009, with matinees at 3:00 PM and evening shows at 8:00 PM. Please call Tanghalang Pilipino at 832-3661 or look for Paolo at 0920-9535381 for other information.
