Dulaang U.P.'s third offering for its 31st season is "Hamlet Redux," a translation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet by the National Artist for Theater Rolando Tinio. The late Tinio fused the poetry of Shakespeare with the modern feel of contemporary times.
Dulaang UP, the official performing group for theater of the University of the Philippines, immortalizes Hamlet for this generation. The staging of "Hamlet Redux" gives the audience the chance to take part in retelling and rediscovering the tragic tale of the young prince of Denmark.
Multi-awarded director, actor, and playwright Tony Mabesa helms this project, which is ongoing until December 10 at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
"Hamlet Redux" stars Arnold Reyes as Hamlet, Angeli Bayani as Gertrude, Allan Palileo as Polonius, Michael Ian Lomongo as Horacio, Patrick Valera as Laertes, Buche Canton as Ophelia, Faust Peneyra as Rosencrantz, and Arkel Mendoza as Guildenstern.
It is the second time that former Seiko Films sexy actor Dante Balboa will act for Dulaang U.P. He stars as King Claudius in the Tagalog version of "Hamlet Redux." His first stint with the said theater group was the staging of Nick Joaquin's "Tatarin" during Dulaang U.P.'s 29th season.
