Even before his controversial gay role in The Sisters on TV5, Edgar Allan Guzman already finished shooting his scenes for the Cinemalaya entry Ligo na U, Lapit na Me.

Ligo na U is directed by Erick Salud for the New Breed Category of the 7th edition of the Cinemalaya.

He also has another role in Bisperas by Jeffrey Jeturian in the Director’s showcase category also in Cinemalaya.

At age 21 most of Edgar Allan’s experience has come from TV with programs like the gag show Loko Moko U and Hey, It’s Saburday! a variety show for teens.

In Ligo na U, Edgar plays Intoy, who is secretly in love with his friend Jenny, the most beautiful girl on campus. Jenny (Mercedes Cabral) is rich and quirky. Intoy is street-smart and ordinary. But this friendship is not simple, since Jenny has bestowed on Intoy some perks and privileges, including going to bed with her on the condition that they will not fall in love with each other.

Ligo na U is very memorable for Edgar because of his hot scenes with female lead Mercedes Cabral.

Edgar admired the courage and daring of Mercedes which he tried to emulate, "Kahit sino namang lalaki mapapansin yung sex appeal ni Mercedes. Game siya, nakipagsabayan ako sa love scenes at kissing scenes. Wala siyang limit e. Pag sinabi ng director, ’Puwede ba?’... ’Puwede po.’ Di man ako maghubad, ang ginawa kong love scenes, may emotions. Kung ano yung emotions sa love scenes, ’yan ang papakita mo."

In the story there was the inevitable escalation of romance, "Nung una one night stand na mabilis, ganun yon e. Pangalawa medyo may na raramdaman ka na. Pangatlo ’yon na yung love."

The appeal of his character is in being the shy boy next door. "Gusto niya ’ko. Di ko alam bakit ako yung napili niya. Meron akong line na ’Bakit ako?’ Ang dami naman diyan na may itsura. Yung character ko, di siya guwapo, di siya panget, tama lang."

Edgar Allan admits that he enjoyed the intimate scenes. "During our love scene, linya ko, ’Bakit ako?’ Pero yung ’Bakit ako?’ sarap na sarap ako. ’Yon ang mga maliliit na bagay na kailangan kong isipin habang sex scene, kaya nakukuha ko emotions pag love. Pag mahal mo, kahit ano makita o maamoy mo, talagang tatanggapin mo siya dahil mahal na mahal mo siya."

He also appreciates the patience of veteran directors Erick Salud and Jeffrey Jeturian in Bisperas. "Style ni Direk Erick sasabihin niya sa ’yo kung sobra o kulang yung acting mo. Nung unang day of shooting tinanong ko sa kanya. Tapos nabago ko naman yung atake ko, pa’no i-deliver yung line. Magaan din katrabaho, nakangiti lang. Di sila yung director na after cut di mo sila makakausap. Sila Direk Erick at Jeffrey, parati ko sila tinatanong."

Edgar Allan believes this annual filmfest is a great way for young actors to be recognized. "Ang Cinemalaya ay malaking tulong sa lahat ng baguhang artista na gustong sumabak sa mainstream. Eto na rin yung filmfest na nagpapasikat sa artista like Coco Martin. Tapos yung ibang galing teatro na lumalabas din sa Cinemalaya, ngayon nasa teleserye na sila, like Irma Adlawan. ’Yon ang tulong ng Cinemalaya sa baguhang artista."

During the gala night of Ligo na U, Lapit na Me, Edgar Allan’s classmates in his culinary school—Precious Lara Quigaman, Marco Alcaraz, Luis Alandy, and Lucky Mark Mercado—served desserts that they themselves prepared.

MOTHER LILY IMPRESSED BY CAST. Ligo na U, Lapit na Me will be screened this Saturday at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (12:45 pm) and Greenbelt 3 (11 am) in Makati City.

When Regal matriarch Mother Lily Monteverde watched Ligo na U, Lapit na Me earlier this week, she was reportedly impressed by the film.

Noel Ferrer, the producer of the film, shared the text message sent by Mother Lily regarding the film:

"Ligo na U is a well-made film that has to be watched by more people and learn from it. I am learning so much from this young and Ligo team especially the handling of the director Erick Salud and the witty and effective script of Jerry Gracio. The lead actor Edgar Allan Guzman is very good. His eyes really shows how sensitive an actor he is. He should be given bigger acting projects. I am looking forward to working with them in Regal."

Mother Lily has asked Direk Erick to helm a movie for Regal Films. She is also eyeing Regal Films to be the distributor of the movie.

Erick Salud, Jerry Gracio, and Edgar Allan Guzman are slated to sign a contract with Regal when Roselle Monteverde-Teo, Mother Lily’s daughter, returns to the Philippines from her trip abroad.

Other films competing in the New Breed category are: Amok by Lawrence Fajardo; Ang Babae sa Septic Tank by Marlon Rivera and Chris Martinez; Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa by Alemberg Ang and Alvin Yapan; Bahay Bata by Eduardo W. Roy, Jr. and Jerome Zamora; Cuchera by Joseph Israel M. Laban; i-Libings by Rommel Andreo Sales; Niño by Loy Arcenas; and Teoriya by Alistaire Christian E. Chan.
