PRESS STATEMENT FROM GMA NEWS TV:
"The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) partners with GMA News TV to present this special report on the extent of the Ampatuan family’s wealth.
"For years, this was the stuff of legend – mansions sprouting from Davao to Maguindanao, and a fleet of vehicles that would make a car dealer rich beyond his wildest dreams.
"But in 2011, the Manila Regional Trial Court was able to identify real property assets belonging to the Ampatuans totaling 5 million square meters or 5 square kilometers--more than twice the size of Pateros (2.1 square kilometers) and a little smaller than San Juan (7.7 square kilometers). These included more than 34 land titles under the name of Andal Sr. in Maguindanao province alone as well as properties in ritzy subdivisions like Dasmarinas Village, Ayala Alabang and the Juna subdivision in Davao.
"In addition there were 597 bank accounts, 130 motor vehicles and 142 firearms, which the Ombudsman found reason to believe were far in excess of the family’s capacity to earn.
"The PCIJ’s Ed Lingao discovers that the court’s move to freeze these assets may have come too late. This investigation into the Ampatuan Wealth airs on GMA News TV this Saturday, November 24 at 10 PM, in time for the 3rd anniversary of the Maguindanao Massacre."
