Chanel Latorre on Kris Aquino missing out on Maratabat: "I don’t think Joshua and Bimby would approve na nire-rape ang Mommy nila on screen."

The female lead role of Maratabat was first offered to Kris Aquino but she had to turn it down due to conflict of schedules. Chanel Latorre, who bagged the role of Stella, believes Kris Aquino's kids would not have approved of the rape scene in this political drama.

“I like the fact that Maratabat reminds us of Maguindanao massacre,” ani Chanel na gumanap bilang Muslim woman na asawa ng karakter ni Ping Medina.

“[Dahil sa] clan wars, aside from the Maguindanao massacre, there are victims there who deserve justice pero di na naalala yung kaso, di nanapu-push through yung mga bagay. It promotes awareness, it has a cause, di lang siya for entertainment purposes but also for a greater cause.”

ON REPLACING KRIS AQUINO.

“Siyempre nakakagulat and as I’ve heard from older people Kris was once the Queen of Massacre films of Philippine Cinema.

"I don’t think Joshua and Bimby would approve na nire-rape ang Mommy nila on screen."

“Nahirapan ako kasi I didn’t want to know what’s going to happen in that scene, I only asked Direk Arlyn kung ano yung extent ng galaw ko for the camera but I told them I want to be surprised, I want to be shocked.

“Sabi ko, ‘do whatever you want to me. I just don’t want to know what you guys are gonna do to me.' I was really shocked kasi ginawa akong bag.

“I’ve done a lot of films with violence, for me that was the most brutal and violent scene that I ever did.

“Parang pahapyaw lang but you have to see the film so that you know kasi mahirap kung sasabihin kung paano but we did it as realistically as possible and I felt the trauma that you felt after the scene was real."

“I’m playing the role of Stella Mahardika, the wife of a would-be governor played by Ping Medina.

"Very controlled yung character, e, medyo malayo sa character ko kasi very expressive ako. Kailangan yung mga emotions mo controlled talaga, tapos yung di masyadong magalaw.

"Sobrang refined niya na lady, e, boyish ako in real life. Dun babaeng-babae ako. Since I have a husband siya yung priority ko all the times, yung mga ideals ko parang ibababa ko for my husband.”

"Nung pauwi na kami from Maguindanao, sabi ko, ‘Mommy can you pick me up in the airport?’

"Sabi niya, 'airport?

'Ha? Buti buhay ka pa!'

"Yung stigma medyo nawala nung pumunta kami dun. We were expecting a different Maguindanao, we were expecting na may military force, medyo magulo, it’s not peaceful but when we went there, we were totally shocked na it was so peaceful, so quiet and people are really trying hard na maiangat uli ang sarili nila, nama wala ang stigma na yun. It’s so hard kasi how they’ll be able to succeed as a town kung ang iniisip na lang ng mga tao yung tainted past nila?"

“After this I would like to experience that too. Right now I’m doing a TV show Yagit, I play the mother of one [of the] yagits.

"She came from Cebu, kinuha siya ni Direk Gina because she was really good. At the moment, yung character ko hindi pa bumabalik kasi sa story, my daughter had to go to the Lola.

“I’m 25 years old, I studied Nursing in UST and nag-Med [Medicine] school ako after but I didn’t finish Med proper because of acting. The opportunity is so rare and not a lot of people get this opportunity.

“May dalawa akong artista na gusto, si Tito Joel Torre and Ms. Cherie Gil. They’re very versatile actors and yung idea ko of acting, nai-inspire ako sa kanila.”
