Puzzling: MMFF 2022 jurors snub Family Matters in many categories

Family Matters, one of the acclaimed movies in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival, received only one award (Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award) and got only a handful of nominations.

Ang Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award ay ipinagkakaloob ng Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) mula noong 1990 sa “best film that portrays Philippine culture and Filipino people to the world.”

Ang mga pelikulang tumanggap ng pagkilalang ito ay ang mga sumusunod:

1990 — Andrea, Paano Ba Ang Maging Isang Ina? (best picture, 11 awards).

1991 — Juan Tamad at Mr. Shooli sa Mongolian Barbecue: The Movie (second best picture, 7 awards).

1992 — Okay Ka, Fairy Ko! Part 2 (3 awards).

1993 — May Minamahal (second best picture, 9 awards).

1994 — none.

1995 — Muling Umawit Ang Puso (best picture, 11 awards).

1996 — Magic Temple (best picture, 14 awards).

1997 — Nasaan Ang Puso? (best picture, 10 awards).

1998 — Jose Rizal (best picture, 17 awards).

1999 — Muro-ami (best picture, 13 awards).

2000 — Tanging Yaman (best picture, 9 awards).

2001 — Bagong Buwan (second best picture, 7 awards).

2004 — Panaghoy sa Suba (second best picture, 7 awards)

MMFF BEST PICTURE WINNERS

Sa kasaysayan ng MMFF kaugnay sa mga nagkamit ng Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award (GAJVCA) … labing-anim ang best picture, pito ang second best picture, at tatlo ang third best picture.

Pito sa nagkamit ng special award na ito ang hindi kabilang sa best picture winners.

Sa MMFF 1992, best picture ang Andres Manambit: Angkan ng Matatapang, second best picture ang Takbo… Talon… Tili!!!, at third best picture ang Engkanto.

Nominadong best picture ang GAJVCA awardee na Okay Ka, Fairy Ko! Part 2, ganoon din ang Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal at Shake, Rattle & Roll IV.

Sa MMFF 1994, ang anim na official entries ay Kanto Boy 2: Anak ni Totoy Guapo, Lucas Abelardo, Mama’s Boys 2: Lets’s Go Na, Ang Pagbabalik ni Pedro Penduko, Shake, Rattle & Roll V, at Wanted: Perfect Father. Walang pinarangalan bilang best picture, best director, best screenplay, at GAJVCA.

Noong Hunyo 1994 naganap ang 1994 Manila Film Festival Scam na yumanig sa local movie industry.

Sa MMFF 2007, best picture ang Resiklo, second best picture ang Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo, at third best picture ang Enteng Kabisote 4: Okay Ka, Fairy Ko, The Beginning of the Legend.

Sa taong ito ay dalawa ang GAJVCA winners: Bahay Kubo: A Pinoy Mano Po at Katas ng Saudi. Hindi nominated ang dalawang ito bilang best picture.

Sa MMFF 2009, best picture ang Ang Panday, second best picture ang I Love You, Goodbye, at third best picture ang Ang Darling Kong Aswang. Best director si Joel Lamangan para sa Mano Po 6: A Mother’s Love, na hindi nominadong best picture pero siyang pinagkalooban ng GAJVCA.

Sa MMFF 2012, best picture ang One More Try, second best picture ang El Presidente, at third best picture ang Sisterakas. Nominadong best picture ang The Stranger, pati ang GAJVCA honoree na Thy Womb.

Ang dalawa pang nominadong best picture ay My Teacher, at My Father, Myself. Ligwak sa karera ng best picture ang Partners In Crime, Labyu With An Accent, at Family Matters.

Kapwa ngangey sa gabi ng parangal ang Partners In Crime at Labyu With An Accent, samantalang GAJVCA lamang ang natamo ng Family Matters.

QUESTIONABLE WINNERS

Nominado ang Family Matters sa mga kategoryang best actor (Noel Trinidad), best supporting actor (Nonie Buencamino), best original theme song, at gender sensitivity award.

Hindi na-nominate ang mga aktres ng Family Matters na sina Liza Lorena, Mylene Dizon, Agot Isidro, at Nikki Valdez.

Si Ivana Alawi, nominadong best actress para sa Partners In Crime. At si Tiffany Grey, nominadong best supporting actress para sa My Father, Myself.

Sabi-sabi, tradisyon na sa MMFF na naku-question ang resulta ng awards. Para lang daw iyan sa pulitika na ang hanash ng talunan ay nadaya siya.

Pero sa MMFF 2022, hindi kinu-question ang pagkapanalo nina Nadine Lustre (best actress, Deleter), Ian Veneracion (best actor, Nanahimik Ang Gabi), Mon Confiado (best supporting actor, Nanahimik Ang Gabi), at Dimples Romana (best supporting actress, My Father, Myself).

Ang tanong… bakit hindi na-nominate ang Family Matters sa maraming kategorya?
