Babae sa Breakwater, directed by the late Mario O'Hara (main photo) and topbilled by Katherine Luna (inset), will open the 8th edition of Cinemalaya that will kick off on July 20, 2012. 25 new digital films will compete on July 20-29 at the CCP, Greenbelt 3 Makati and Trinoma Quezon City.

Babae sa Breakwater by Mario O'Hara is the opening film of the 2012 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition on July 20, 7:30 PM at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater).

The film is Cinemalaya’s tribute to the late screenwriter, director and actor Mario O’Hara who passed away on June 26, 2012.

In his speech during the press conference held at the CCP, Cinemalaya festival director Chris Millado announced that aside from Babae sa Breakwater, Cinemalaya will also be screening Direk Mario's other works such as Tubog sa Ginto, Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang, Insiang, and Tatlo Dalawa Isa.

Babae Sa Breakwater tells of the life of Manila’s vagabonds who make the breakwater along Roxas Boulevard their home. The film features Gardo Versoza, Amy Austria, Lou Veloso, Lucita Soriano, Alchris Galura, Jonard Lomangaya, Ian Valdez and introduces its two lead stars Katherine Luna and Kristoffer King. It was produced by Entertainment Warehouse, Inc.

After a 20-year Filipino film drought at the Cannes International Filmfest since Lino Brocka’s Insiang was screened, the independently produced Babae Sa Breakwater was invited for screening at the Directors Fortnight in 2004.

Cinemalaya will run from July 20-29, 2012 at the CCP and July 21-29, 2012 at Greenbelt and Trinoma. Twenty five new digital films will compete on July 20-29 at the CCP, Greenbelt 3 Makati and Trinoma Quezon City.

Cinemalaya will feature about 60 films on exhibition with twenty five in competition. (CLICK HERE to learn all about the entries competing in the 8th edition of Cinemalaya)

The Cinemalaya Film Congress will take place from July 24-25 from 9 am to 2:30 pm at the CCP Little Theater. Ralph Guggenheim of Pixar Studios, producers of Toy Story, will share his experience in animation storytelling and story-selling during the said congress.

This year's congress will assess the energetic relationship between independent and mainstream filmmaking: how each benefit from each other, and its contribution to the development of Philippine film creative industries.

Meanwhile, the Manila Film Financing Forum will take place on July 21 from 9 am to 6 pm at the Silangan Hall, 4th floor, CCP main building. Case studies will be presented and financing opportunities will also be provided.

Now on its 8th year, Cinemalaya is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Film Development Council of the Philippines and Econolink Investments, Inc. It is an all-digital film festival that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity.
