7th Spring Film Festival to feature Piano in a Factory and 5 Chinese movies from February 1 to 10

Now on its seventh run, the Spring Film Festival will feature (L-R) fantasy- action flick Storm Warriors, family drama-comedy Piano in a Factory, inspirational drama 2Become1, also historical drama Jasmine Women. Catch the film fest happening at the Shangri-La Plaza Cineplex from February 1 to 10.


Marking the Chinese New Year, the Spring Film Festival, now on its seventh year, happens from February 1 to 10. The celebration and lauding of the rich Chinese culture and arts continues this 2013 as the annual movie fest features six Chinese flicks.

On February 1, inspirational drama/romance/comedy 2Become1 tackles the story of advertising executive Bingo Leung who finds a lump in her breast one day. The film, based on Xixi’s published diary Mourning for Breasts, which chronicles the life of a woman battling breast cancer. In the story, Bingo starts living a carefree life and finds friendship in her Doctor V and teenager Sing.

The Spring Film Festival’s banner movie, the 2010 multi-awarded Piano in a Factory, follows shortly. A family drama and comedy, Piano Factory tackles the plight of a father at the verge of being divorced by his wife, likewise his fight for the custody of his daughter. The film is made colourful by the lead character’s pursuing of his passion in the low-paying music industry.

Storm Warriors is a Hong Kong-produced fantasy action film that chronicles the war between Lord Nameless and his battle against nemesis Lord Godless. Highlighted by its special effects, this 2009 science-fiction film is directed by the Pang Brothers.

Award-winning film Jasmine Women, starring Hollywood actress Zhang Ziyi, tells the story of three generations of women who repeat the mistakes of their preceding generation. Zhang Ziyi plays the character of the youngest woman who in the end breaks the cycle of the family’s tragic history. This 2004 drama is directed by Hou Yong and is based on Su Tong’s novel, Women’s Lives.

Space Dream recounts the tale of Zhang Tiancong, a veteran member of the first line-up of Chinese astronauts. Middle-aged, he has never been given a space mission during his entire career. This 2011 film, directed by Wang Jia, depicts China as a country opening up to modernity.

Golden Times narrates the touching story of Teacher Fang and police officer Sun Dayang who put up a home where children left behind by their parents, who migrated to work in the cities, can stay.

Simultaneous with the screening of the six modern Chinese films, the 7th Spring Film Festival will also launch the Chinese Painting in the Philippines, a 180-page coffee-table book which presents the important works of past and present Chinese-Filipino artists.

Also happening during the festival is the 2013 Spring Festival Chinese Painting Exhibit. This painting exhibit will feature seasoned and developing artists from the Chinese painting class of the Confucius Institute and the International Studies for Chinese Arts.

The project aims to promote Filipino-made Chinese paintings, likewise inspire the emergence of fresh talent that will continue the legacy of Chinese art and culture. The On the Wings of Culture Chinese Photo Exhibit, meanwhile, will display images to educate the public with the new wave of cultural reform which is at present happening in China.

The festival also includes a free cultural workshop offering a language class, a Chinese painting class, and a Chinese calligraphy class. This activity shall take place on February 10 from 12 pm to 5pm at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-La Plaza Mall where the 2013 Spring Film Festival annually takes place.
