Richard Gomez plays the haciendero lover of Cherie Gil in indie film Sonata

Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes have already finished filming Sonata, their entry to the Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival All Masters Edition.

In Sonata, Cherie is cast as an opera diva who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown after losing her voice.

Aside from being the lead star in this indie film, Cherie also serves as a co-producer of this project.

Regina Cadena (Cherie Gil's character) is depressed after losing her voice. She returns home to Negros Occidental and through Jonjon (Chino Jalandoni), she rediscovers her art and life.

As the world of the well-traveled opera diva collides with the world of a young boy in the throes of exploration, both discover the nature of art and the healing power of love.

Richard Gomez plays Carlo, Regina's haciendero lover. His intricate involvement with Regina aggravates her loss of desire for life and love.

Sonata serves as a reunion for Cherie and Direk Peque who directed the actress in the 1982 classic film Oro, Plata, Mata.

Chino, the 10-year-old boy in the story, also happens to be the grand nephew of Joel Torre (the lead actor of Oro, Plata, Mata).

The cast and crew shot Sonata for 8 days straight in Negros Occidental. Incidentally, they used the same house where Oro, Plata, Mata was filmed three decades ago.

Sonata is co-produced by Cherie Gil's My Own Mann Productions, Central Digital Lab (the company which restored Oro, Plata, Mata), Wild Sound and Gallaga-Reyes' Ruby's Arms Production Services.

This year's Sineng Pambansa is scheduled to take place from September 7 to 16, 2013.
