Carlo Aquino and Jhong Hilario win acting awards from Young Critics Circle

Carlo Aquino and Jhong Hilario were chosen by the Young Critics Circle as winners in the Best Performance category for the year 2013.


Established in 1990, the Young Critics Circle is composed of members of the academe from the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University.


Carlo won for the Cinemalaya film Porno wherein he portrayed a young man who lends his voice for porn flicks.


Jhong, on the other hand, won for the Sineng Pambansa entry Badil, which tackles corruption in the local elections. Jhong's character is tapped to give money to voters in exchange for support.


The YCC chose Adolfo Alix Jr.’s Porno as the Best Film of 2013. The award-giving body described Porno as a "triptych film of individuals linked through pornography."


Porno also bagged the awards for Best Screenplay as well as Best Sound and Aural Orchestration.


The Best Editing award was shared by both Porno and Frasco Mortiz's horror film Pagpag.


The Metro Manila Film Fest entry Pagpag is topbilled by Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo.


Mel Chionglo’s Lauriana won the Best Cinematography and Visual Design award. Starring Bangs Garcia and Allen Dizon, this period film tells the story of a woman who suffers abuse from her lover who is a Philippine Constabulary officer.


This year, the YCC introduced a new category called Best First Features to encourage the growth of emerging filmmakers. This year, the recipients are Angustia (Kristian Sendon Cordero), Puti (Mike Alcazaren), and Ang Turkey Man Ay Pabo Rin (Randolph Longjas).

The Cinema One entry Angustia initially received an X rating from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board but it was eventually lowered to R-18.


In the film, Alex Medina is cast as a Spanish friar who has sexual relations with an indigenous woman.

Puti is a Cine Filipino entry starring Jasmine Curtis Smith and Ian Veneracion, who portrays a painter who suffers from delusions after getting into a car accident. Starring Tuesday Vargas, Ang Turkey Man Ay Pabo Rin is a comedy film that competed in the 1st Cine Filipino Film Fest.


The awarding ceremony is set on the third week of March.
