The 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival is now on full blast and Jasmine Curtis Smith is hoping that Filipinos will support local films, including her entry Culion.

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press talked to Jasmine about her MMFF 2019 entry at the Culion cast party last Monday, December 23, at Filinvest City in Alabang, Muntinlupa.

Since Filipino families typically prefer watching comedy films or family movies during the holiday season, Jasmine was asked how she handles the competition with other MMFF entries knowing that her film fest entry is a historical drama.

She said, "I guess sanay na rin naman ako na ganun lagi yung expectations and parang hindi na nagbago kasi.

"In the short decade na nagtrabaho ako in the industry, ganun pa rin siya, e. So natutunan ko na every time, that's also my expectation."

Jasmine compared this feeling to what her character in the movie went through. In Culion, she played Doris, one of the central characters diagnosed with leprosy.

She continued, "Siguro, it's a way to see na reflection siya of how hopeful I really was in the beginning.

"Nahu-hurt ako kapag may kaba, kapag hindi ka pinapansin kasi may mas lamang sa ganitong genre, or ganitong mas pang-masa or mas family or mas comedy.

"But nasanay na rin ako, the same way with Doris, medyo yung hope nagagasgas, nagfe-fade. But I have high hopes na it's gonna take a longer time for our industry to change and accept that and totally embrace that change.

"Kasi nangyayari siya, e, pero for some reason, we keep taking steps back."

ANOTHER AWARD FOR JASMINE?

Culion tells the story of three friends living in a leper colony on an island in Palawan. Jasmine is one of the lead stars of this MMFF 2019 entry along with Iza Calzado and Meryll Soriano. The film is directed by Alvin Yapan and written by Ricky Lee.

"It changes the way she thinks, kung paano ang pamamalakad niya sa buhay niya. Similar to kung anong pinagdadaanan natin ngayon as a country, as individuals, marami tayong hinaharap.

"And sometimes, kahit punung-puno tayo ng hope, minsan may isang mangyayari sa buhay natin na might change the way we think, we feel. Akala natin end of the world na yun."

Early reviews of the film said all three lead stars showcased brilliant acting in Culion. Many are wondering whether Jasmine will earn another MMFF award.

In 2017, Jasmine was named Best Supporting Actress for the film Siargao.

But for Jasmine, getting an award is just a bonus.

She explained, "Honestly, kapag part ako ng film festival, I just really look for yung camaraderie, yung feeling na andaming naka-line-up na sabay mong mga Filipino films.

"So walang ibang choice kundi yun ang panonoorin, and yung feeling lang na para siyang malaking party for Filipino films.

"Hindi ako masyadong nandun sa kung sinong mananalo or kung mananalo ako. Always bonus but I always look for, 'Sana maganda lahat ng pelikula this festival.'

"Yun yung nilu-look forward ko na mapanood lahat yun. Parang as an actress, I still look forward to going to the cinemas to watch all of the entries, not just mine, and not just to see kung puno yung mga sinehan or nakabenta kami, pero kung maganda ang reception sa lahat ng pelikulang part ng festival."
