Nung una, it took four hours. At isang beses dinye [dyed].

“So, tatlong beses akong nagpabalik-balik for this effect.”

“Twenty years ago yun!” bulalas ni Tita Boots.

“Tomorrow, we’re having our pictorial for the TV series. Maglu-look test kami. Our stylist will have to tell me.

“'OK ba ito, o gusto mo bang mas platinum or whatever?' She’s the only white-haired character here.”

“Pero the grandeur, the touch, the texture, the richness… nandun pa rin yun,” pakli ni Tita Boots.

So, hindi siya tinitipid? Yung ibang TV production, hinihigpitan ang budget.

“Well, kilala naman natin ang Regal, e. At saka ang GMA. They don’t spare the budget kapag quality ang pinag-uusapan.”

“During the pandemic, I received several offers to do teleseryes, films. Pero ang layo ng location!

“Cebu, La Union, Sorsogon. Nahiya ako sa asawa ko, e. Pero ito, malapit lang. Sa may Tanay lang.

“And the producers are very considerate of my being senior. So, hindi naman ako yung two weeks straight. May break naman.”

WHY BOOTS ANSON ROA-RODRIGO

Ikinasal si Boots kay Pete Roa noong 1964. Nabiyuda siya noong 2007.

Natagpuan niya ang pangalawang glorya kay Atty. Francisco “King” Rodrigo Jr. noong 2014.

“But in my case, with due respect to my late husband—and with due respect to my present husband.”

Huwag na sana iyon dagdagan ng Duterte… as in Boots Anson Roa-Rodrigo-Duterte.

“Alam n’yo, to the credit of Atty. Rodrigo, siya ang nagsabi sa akin, ‘Just stick to Boots Anson-Roa. Alam ko, profession mo yan, you worked hard through the years, and it’s in deference to Pete.’

“King never told me, ‘Use Rodrigo.’ He never said na, ‘Gamitin mo yung Rodrigo.’”

Ang biro kay Tita Boots, something to the effect na, “The playground is still wide open…”

Napangiti ang beteranang aktres, “May bago kaming joke. Di ba, kasi, may edad na kami? So, ang joke namin dati, 'The factory is closed but the playground is open.'

“May karugtong kami doon because he is 82 and I’m 76. So, 'The factory is closed but the playground is ope... but the toy is broken.'”

Can the toy be fixed?

“Ayokong sabihin na it is irreparable… there are many ways to skin a cat. At iba ang lambingan ng matatanda.”

TITA BOOTS AS NEW MMFF CHAIR

“Siyempre, kinikilala natin that we cannot please everybody!” bulalas ni Tita Boots.

“And we will just keep on praying that the losers would be magnanimous in their defeat, and the winners would be gracious in their victory.

“So far, mukhang wala namang problema, ‘no? I think we have a good mix. Maganda yung 19 [aspiring entries], it was a very good mix.

“And yung scoring namin… kanina lang kami nag-deliberate, kanina lang kasi pumasok yung aggregate scoring. Puro individual kami.

It was a very collegial thing.

“Sa deliberation, wala kaming batuhan ng napkin. Wala namang sigawan.”

NO MOVIES FOR KIDS? NO PROBLEM

Iba-ibang genre ang Magic 8 ng MMFF 2021—action (A Hard Day), social drama (Big Night!), romance comedy (Love At First Stream), drama (Whether The Weather Is Fine/Kun Maupay Man It Panahon), suspense thriller (Nelia), horror (Huwag Kang Lalabas), comedy horror (The ExorSis), at romance (Huling Ulan sa Tag-araw).

Bong Revilla.

“In the first place, wala silang ipinadalang application this year. Hindi sila nag-apply,” paliwanag ni Tita Boots.

“I attribute that to the fact na siguro, itong mga producers ay naninimbang din. Malaki ang budget nila, di ba?

“Baka nga kagaya last year, online na naman ang mangyari, nobody was sure until recently na bubuksan na ang teatro.

“So, it was a risk for many of the producers.”

Yung A Hard Day ni Dingdong Dantes ay carry over mula sa naudlot na 1st Summer MMFF na gaganapin sana noong Abril 11-21, 2020. Yung The ExorSis ng magkapatid na Toni at Alex Gonzaga ay napili para sa MMFF 2020, pero nag-back out.

This year, dini-discourage pa ang mga bata na manood ng sine, lalo na yung hindi pa nababakunahan.

Pahayag ni Tita Boots, “Alam mo, we have to go by the IATF protocols and safety measures. And hindi natin alam kung kailan ili-lift itong restrictions for children to go to the theater, ‘no?"

It appeals to the youth, ‘no? Siguro, kalahati niyan, pwedeng pambata.

It’s a business, and responsible move.

“Anyway, as in the past, halimbawa, yung mga hindi napili, they have good playdates to work on.

“The January playdates are really very, very good. Pwedeng dun nila ipasok yan.

ON REOPENING OF MOVIE HOUSES

Oo, napakalaking bagay. Kasi, kawawa ang mga producers, e. Malaking bagay yun.

“And of course for the audience… parang… wow!

“It gives one a sight of liberation from being locked down, ano?”
