ABS-CBN, through its new film arm Star Magic Studios, has launched the movie careers of three new love teams via the movie Connected.
The new project is helmed by director Theodore “Ted” Boborol, who also directed the launching movies of love teams Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto, Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil, and Loisa Andalio and Ronnie Alonte.
In a Zoom interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), Direk Ted shared stories about the love teams of Connected.
According to him, he was confident to launch these love teams given their “history” before the movie.
He said, “Sabi nga ni Amanda Zamora sa isang presscon, ang difference sa kanila na before they were launched into a love team, yung ibang love teams kasi, ni-launch sila na artista na sila, so they saw each other at their best.
“Sila, they got to know each other first and saw their most raw selves nila na walang make-up, walang ano sa loob ng bahay, they were housemates.
“They saw each other at their worst and at their best so they have the same dreams, similar common dreams.
“So, in a way, yun yung advantage sa kanila na they have this certain connection na hindi nahahanap sa mga love teams na binuo lang because of producers.”
And then there are those whose reel love teams have turned to real.
Does Direk Ted see this happening to any of the three love teams in Connected?
“Meron, yes. Ang sagot ko ay yes,” he said but did not name which one.
But he would often use as an example the successful love team of John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo that has endured despite of the two being a non-couple.
Frankly speaking, Direk Ted said, “You know what, ang advice ko talaga ay huwag, be like John Lloyd and Bea para kung gusto nilang tumagal as a love team.”
He added, “Pero sinagot nila ako, e. ‘Direk, KathNiel.’ Wala na akong masagot!,” and quickly took it back, saying he just made up the exchange as a joke.
But speaking of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla again as points of reference, Direk Ted said having real-life relationships off-cam shouldn't affect their careers, whether being in a love team or not.
He elaborated, “For me talaga, hindi na uso yung pinapakialaman mo yung real life.
“For me, kailangan you should get pass through that whether kayo or hindi, kung love team kayo o mape-pair kayo sa iba, mas importante sa akin yung craft.
“Hindi na magwu-work yung mga ganung old school formula, support ko na lang sila.”
DIREK TED ON THE THREE LOVE TEAMS
Direk Ted praised the three love teams under his direction, not only for their chemistry in the movie, but also for their thoughtfulness towards each other off-cam.
Andi and Kobie, for example, “Yung KoDrea, sobrang they’re really a tandem, partners in crime.
“Napansin ko talaga na, yes, they might be sweet as friends, but when it comes to work, parang business partners na sobrang they help each other.
“Like parang tuwing may eksena na nahihirapan si Kobie, parang acting coach na rin si Andi.
"Or tuwing kailangan ni Andi ng comfort and what-have-you, sandalan niya si Kobie.
“So yun yung nakita ko sa partnership nila and that really is, for me, magandang qualities in a love team.
“So, sana, ipagpatuloy nila yun lalo na sila pinakabata, marami pa silang puwedeng puntahan.”
About Ralph and Gail, Direk Ted said their opposite personalities have given their love team its own brand of sparks.
"Sa RalphGail naman, they complement each other kasi si Gail, very ‘Englisher’ from New York habang si Ralph naman ay super duper PBB, showbiz fan!
“Nanunuod pa iyan ng live shows sa PBB Teen Clash, fan club yan ni Joj and Jai Agpangan! As a 13-year-old, pumupunta sa tapat ng PBB house, nanunuod.”
“Maganda rin yung relationship nila kasi obviously they have something going on inside the house.
“Parang inside the house, may crush-crush sila sa isa’t isa and nahihiya pa si Ralph noon kay Gail.
“So, the fact na hindi makatingin si Ralph sa mata ni Gail and pagdating sa movie na ito, may kissing scene na sila.
"Ang layo ng development nila and nakikita ko yun sa friendship nila. Sobra silang nagsusuportahan sa isa’t isa.”
Direk Ted also related a few occasions when he witnessed the growing closeness of RalphGail behind the scenes.
He said, “Like sa vlog ko na-interview ko pala si Ralph na ngumunguya pa at may crumbs pa of the cake that he ate.
“Alam mo, si Gail, noong nag-edit ako, doon ko lang nakita na si Gail ay tumitingin sa akin.”
Gail was apparently pointing at Ralph’s lips to indicate the crumbs that could be seen on the camera.
How about Chico, 28, and Amanda, 21?
“Yung ChiManda parang aso’t pusa, mga aso’t pusa iyang dalawang iyan probably because of their age difference.
“The good thing about it is kapag okay naman sila, super close naman.
"Kasi hindi ito yung first movie nila, they were in Love At First Stream, so in a way, nagka-bonding na sila doon, nagkaroon din sila ng music video na sila yung bida.
“So, minsan, masha-shock ako sa kanila kasi, minsan, parang magkaaway na naman itong mga ito.
"‘Tapos noong sa mediacon natin, pagdating ko doon, nasa isang corner yung dalawa, sweet na nag-uusap. Itong dalawang ito talaga!
“Sila actually yung pinaka-na-surprise ako sa lahat kasi I already expected the galing of the other two love teams.
“Pero kay Amanda at Chico, if you see the reading talagang, my gosh, paano ito.
“Pero pagdating sa set, they came prepared. Yung initial ano ko na baka sobrang maging cringe, hindi. Kasi sobra silang nag-work hard.
"So I can just imagine if mas lalo pa silang bigyan ng role at mas i-develop pa nila yung skills nila, meron silang pupuntahan.”
Connected started showing on July 22, 2022 on KTX.ph and Cinexpress.
