Vilma Santos-starrer Ekstra, Jake Vargas among those honored at 48th Worldfest Houston International Film Festival

The Vilma Santos-starrer Ekstra was chosen as the grand winner for Best Foreign Feature Film in the 48th WorldFest Houston International Film Festival held in Texas, USA.

Directed by Jeffrey Jeturian, this 2013 Cinemalaya entry also won the Platinum Remi Award in the Comedy category.

Director Jeffrey personally accepted the plaque that was handed out during the awarding ceremony held last Sunday, April 19.

Three other Filipino films were given Gold Remi Awards:

These were:

1) Joel Lamangan's Kamkam (Greed) that bagged the Gold Award in the Mature Theme category

2) Perci Intalan's Dementia that earned a Gold Award in the Fantasy/Horror category

3) Louie Ignacio's Asintado (Between The Eyes) that also won a Gold Award in the Children category.

Jake Vargas was named as Best Rising Star for his performance as a drug lord's courier in Asintado.


WorldFest aims to recognize and honor outstanding creative excellence in film & video. This year, the organizers chose 51 full-length film premieres from over 500 entries that were submitted to the film fest.

It was founded over 50 years ago as Cinema Arts, an International Film Society in August 1961. WorldFest became the third competitive international film festival in North America, following San Francisco and New York.
