The winners of the 2015 World Premieres Film Festival-Philippines were honored during the ceremony held earlier tonight, June 28, at the SM Mall of Asia Centerstage.
Mercedes Cabral cracked a joke when she gave her acceptance speech after being named as Best Actress in the Filipino New Cinema category. The lead star of An Kubo sa Kawayanan earned the award for playing Michelle, a calado embroiderer who being convinced to abandon her house by a bamboo grove.
"This is my first acting award," said Mercedes. "Actually, gusto ko lang manalong ng Best Dressed award kaya ako nagsuot ng ganito. But I won Best Actress pa."
Fil-Italian actor-director Ruben Maria Soriquez was pleasantly surprised to earn the Best Actor plum for his film Of Sinners and Saints. "I didn't expect it since this is my first acting role for a main film," said the actor who played a priest serving in Payatas. His character becomes involved in the problems of his former lover (portrayed by Chanel Latorre) who is now married to a violent man.
