Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz support ABS-CBN's Film Restoration Project headed by Leo Katigbak

(L-R) Bea Alonzo, Leo Katigbak, John Lloyd Cruz, Direk Cathy Garcia Molina and Bea Saw graced the recent screening of Karnal. This digitally restored and re-mastered movie is included in the "REELive the Classics” restored films exhibition ongoing at Rockwell Powerplant Cinema 5.

“Basically, when we set up the Philippine archives ni [Ms. Charo Santos] Concio that is always part of the plan pero at that time it’s very, very expensive.

“Ultimately, I think it also stems from the fact na mahal namin ang pelikula. She grew up watching movies, I grew up watching movies at sa akin yung mga nagawa nila [Ishmael] Bernal, nila [Lino] Brocka, Mike de Leon, ihahanay ko ‘yan sa mga nagawa nila Alfred Hitchcock saka nila [Ingmar] Bergman pero ngayon nawawala na, nakakalimutan na ng mga tao na once upon a time ang galing-galing natin kahit sa pinakamagaling sa buong mundo, lumalaban tayo.

“To me it’s really more than that. I think that’s the greatest tragedy: great, great movies that’s been forgotten.”

“Unang-una pinakamalaking challenge mo yung mga materyal, are they surviving? Pag nakuha mo yung materyal the rights, nandun yung music rights, andun yung rights of ownership but more of it’s not really the technical [aspect] kasi minsan isang tingin mo, malalaman mo kung restorable siya o hindi.

“We cannot restore everything, resources wise. But I think a lot of the producers and the owners should try doing it themselves but the main problem is, it is a costly investment. If they do not see a return, will they spend on it kaya lang yun nga lang ang nangyari na it reached the point na maraming pelikula na nasira na.

“In fact, halimbawa, we’ve been trying to negotiate with the Nepomuceno Productions for Dahil Sa Isang Bulaklak and Igorota of Charito Solis. Nung ultimately they were considering it, nawawala na yung negatives. Hindi na mahanap so wala na. The negatives were not even here in the country but apparently archive or the vault it was restored have changed ownership and maybe that material was di na nila ma-track. Tragedy yung ganun.”

“Most of the LVN are not restorable, Sampaguita and Leah Productions wala na ang mga ‘yan.

“Okay lang but they also have to agree, pero they have to come to terms and the rights. Parang yung sa kanila, feeling naman nila they are not in agreement, prerogative din naman, they can restore rin it naman,” paliwanag niya.

“Mayroong cooperative, mayroong hindi. I think in some producers also, puwedeng halimbawa it’s a prestige project, feeling nila, ‘pag binitawan ko na ito, hindi na ito akin.’ Minsan may sentimental reason, sometimes it will also be financial.

MORE DIGITALLY REMASTERED MOVIES.

Paliwanag ni Mr. Katigbak, “Unang-una aside from restoration there are also a lot of platforms right now and they require digital so kung gagawin mo na siyang digital dapat itama mo na yung quality level niya.

E, pag ni-rescan mo yung HD lalabas, ‘Ay, mali-mali pala yung kulay,’ ‘Ay, may gasgas pala.’

“Itatama mo ulit yun. Lumalabas na even the newer movies we really do have to start working on them. The cost is also lower, the older the movie, the more expensive it becomes. Mas mabuti na mas maaga pa, agapan mo, ma-prepare mo na siya for a new platforms.”

SCREENINGS AT ROCKWELL. Magkakaroon ng pagkakataon ang publiko na mapanood ang ilan sa digitally remastered movies tulad ng Sarah Ang Munting Prinsesa, Got To Believe, Sana Maulit Muli, One More Chance, Oro Plata Mata, T-Bird at Ako, Karnal, Hindi Nahahati Ang Langit, at Tanging Yaman in full HD.

Ani Mr. Katigbak, “At the end of the month August 26-September 1, Cinema 5 will be devoted to Rockwell. We have about eight films that will be shown on a rotating schedule, they just have to identify the time again. Rockwell already approved the titles. We’re also hoping that it will be restored for the second time.”

“That’s why part of our commitment really is taking the films back to the audience. That’s why may tie up kami sa UP [University of the Philippines], may tie up kami sa Rockwell, may bayad naman yun pero kumbaga tanggap din ng management na hindi siya immediate babalik na pera pero at the same time you have mobile, you have cable so hopefully overtime mababawi agad yung cost niya.”

“Si Piolo is really a joy to work to with kasi siya talaga made it easier for us. In fact when we won the Award of Excellence in Toronto, it was the Piolo campaign. Award of Excellence, International Gold Quill in Toronto. There were only 40 winners from all over the world and from the Philippines, dalawa lang ang nakapasok sa Award of Excellence.”

BEA, JOHN LLOYD SUPPORT PROJECT.

Glad you enjoyed Direk Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s KARNAL.”
