GMA star Jennylyn Mercado will have ABS-CBN actor John Lloyd Cruz as her leading man in an upcoming movie to be produced by Star Cinema.
The network war is again set aside for this movie, just as it was in Jennylyn's most recent starrer, Walang Forever.
In Walang Forever, a 2015 Metro Manila Film Fest entry, the Kapuso actress had the chance to work with ABS-CBN Star Magic actor Jericho Rosales. She followed this up with work with Sam Milby, another Star Magic talent, in the 2015 romantic comedy, The Prenup.
PEP Alerts reported yesterday that the first shooting day of the Jennylyn-John Lloyd movie took place on February 7. PEP also reported that Cathy Garcia-Molina, a proven box-office director, is directing this rom-com.
PEP editor-in-chief Jo-Ann Maglipon says, in PEP's Viber public chat, about Jennylyn and John Lloyd: "These two, separately, have a track record of having on-cam chemistry with whoever star is partnered with them. So teaming them up creates a lot of promise and expectation.
"Their box-office pull will now depend on other factors: script, direction, editing, cinematography. Star Cinema cannot disappoint."
John Lloyd is a five-time Box-Office King, to go by the awards given him by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation. He was recognized for the movies One More Chance, The Mistress, A Very Special Love, You Changed My Life, and It Takes a Man and a Woman.
He had Star Magic's Bea Alonzo as leading lady for the first two films and Viva Entertainment's Sarah Geronimo for the last three.
Jennylyn, meantime, has starred in the blockbuster MMFF movies English Only, Please and Walang Forever, both of them Quantum Films productions.
In English Only, Jennylyn was successfully paired with independent actor Derek Ramsay, while in Walang Forever, she showed strong screen chemistry with Star Magic's Jericho Rosales.
Maglipon reports that, for this Star Cinema movie, the character of Jennylyn will appear ugly at first and become prettier as the movie progresses.
Maglipon observes: "It's an old formula, and the challenge for the creative team is to rework the formula so that it feels new—or, at least, fresh; at most, surprising!"
The photo shows Jennylyn sporting messy hair, which Maglipon has gathered is not a wig.
Its caption reads: "Jennylyn Mercardo in costume for first shooting day for Star Cinema in first rom-com with John Lloyd Cruz."
Earlier today, February 8, Jennylyn is seen with John Lloyd in a photo uploaded on her official Facebook account. Its caption: "Surprise!" plus the hashtags #Movie #StarCinema
