“Isa ito sa best birthday gifts na nakuha ko,” said Jomari Angeles about attending the 69th Cannes Film Fest for the Brillante Mendoza film Ma’Rosa.
Last May 18, Jomari was part of the Filipino delegation that represented the Philippines in the prestigious film festival held in France.
Jomari, who just turned 22 last May 26, is grateful to be part of the film that made waves in the international circuit.
“Breakout film ko ang Ma’Rosa ta’s pumunta pa ng Cannes…tapos nakapunta ako ng Cannes red carpet.”
Jaclyn Jose earned the Best Actress award in Cannes 2016 for her portrayal of Mother Rosa. Jomari plays Erwin, one of her children in this crime drama about Rosa and her huband (played by Julio Diaz) who are incarcerated by corrupt policemen.
Ma'Rosa is slated to open in Philippine cinemas by July 6, 2016.
“Parang super blessed ako. Feeling ko, super blessed ako ngayon this year kasi parang sakto sa birthday ko. Eto yung pinaka-okay na gift,” added the young actor.
Jomari has been acting since 2013 when he was cast as Joel Torre’s son in the Cinema One Originals film Kabisera.
He went on to play a supporting role in the Wagas episode revolving around the transgender love story of Giggle and Jay.
Jomari's film credit prior to Ma’Rosa is playing Abner, the adolescent buddy of the young Manny Pacquiao (Buboy Villar) in Kid Kulafu.
He also did cameos for other indie films such as Soap Opera (as Lovi Poe’s brother) and Red (as one of the members of a band of teen ragamuffins).
What can he say about Maria Isabel Lopez’s "kabogera" moment while wearing her emerald gown on the Cannes red carpet?
“Parang ganun talaga siya as a person, e. Hindi niya talagang sinasadyang i-upstage…gusto niya lang talagang ipakita yung dress niya,” remarked the young actor.
Jomari was able to bump into several Hollywood actors but there’s a catch.
“Actually, hindi kasi ako, magaling sa name ng Hollywood actors,” he admitted.
“Actually, may iba pang international actors na in competition, hindi lang Hollywood actors. Si Kirsten Dunst, kasi judge siya. Si George Miller nakita namin kasi andun sila sa awards night.
"Pati yung ibang directors, sila Cristian Mungiu [Romanian filmmaker], Xavier Dolan [Canadian actor-director], yun yung mga present. Halos lahat kasi ng actors and directors andun nung awards night so makikita mo sila.”

The actor who plays Erwin, Rosa’s son, then described the plot of this film directed by Brillante Mendoza.
“Ang Ma’Rosa kasi tungkol sa family na may sari-sari store na nagpapatakbo si Ms. Jaclyn pati si Sir Julio [Diaz] tapos on the side, nagbebenta sila ng drugs.
"Yun yung parang sideline nila. Tapos, one day, nahuli sila ng pulis. So kami, yung mga anak, kailangan naming maghanap ng way kung paano mapapalaya yung parents namin.”
In the film, the siblings don’t have any idea about the illegal racketeering of their parents.
The siblings in Ma'Rosa are Raquel (Andi Eigenmann), Jackson (Felix Roco), Erwin (Jomari Angeles) and Jillian (Inna Tuazon).
Jomari was first bitten by the acting bug when he joined Star Magic workshops. “Nung time na yun, less yung units sa college kaya nag-enroll ako.”
The actor is a Business Management major in DLSU. “Tapos, nung after dun, nagustuhan ko yung acting. Ang saya pala mag-acting…challenging…mahirap pala siya. Akala mo pag napapanood mo dati sa TV memorize memorize lang pero hindi, pag inintindi mo enough yung acting, mahirap siya. Nag-take off talaga siya nung nagenroll ako sa workshop ni Direk Brillante tapos that time, first batch 2014, nanalo ako ng Best Actor dun.”
He is currently receiving career guidance from by Noel Ferrer, a veteran in the showbusiness and author of the popular book Mag-Artista Ka!
“Actually, matagal na akong walang manager ever since na umalis ako kay Shandii [Bacolod] pero mine-mentoran pa rin ako ni Direk Brillante and Ruby Ruiz. So parang…tinutulungan nila ‘ko ‘pag may alam silang project or ‘pag may auditions, tinutulungan nila ‘ko.”
