Zanjoe Marudo ang Sam Milby believe that they were able to pull off their gay characters in the upcoming movie, The Third Party, which stars Angel Locsin.
As if portraying gay roles is not hard enough for Zanjoe and Sam, they also have to be convincing as lovers in the film.
In this Star Cinema film, Angel plays a woman who gets dumped by her boyfriend (Sam). He eventually enters a same-sex relationship with a gay man played by Zanjoe.
At the press conference of the movie held at the 9501 Restaurant in ABS-CBN Compound last September 28, Sam said that he is excited to play an out-of-the-box character.
“Excited ako kasi first time na ganitong role. Something different para sa akin,” he admitted.
He added that he is happy to reunite with Angel and Sam, whom he worked with in the past in separate projects.
“It’s nice to be able to work again with Zanjoe and Angel.
“Actually, first projects nila sa ABS-CBN, kasama ako do’n. First movie ni Zanjoe, You Got Me, kasama ako do’n,” he said about the 2007 movie with Toni Gonzaga.
Sam then went on to say that he worked with Angel in a Maalaala Mo Kaya episode and in the 2009 ABS-CBN primetime series Only You.
As for Zanjoe, this is not his first time to play a gay role.
He first played a gay character in Bromance: My Brother’s Romance (2013) as well as in the horror flick Maria Leonora Teresa (2014).
However, he said that it is first gay role involved in a same-sex relationship.
AWKWARD! Zanjoe revealed that more than him, it was Sam who felt awkward in portraying lovers.
“Awkward siya nung simula kasi first namin gagawin ni Sam 'to, e. Hindi pa ginagawa nao-awkward na siya, pero once na ginawa na namin siya, nagulat kami na parang okay rin pala. Enjoy rin pala,” Zanjoe teased.
Sam supported his co-star's statement.
“The first few scenes na may sweet scenes kami, how awkward! Pero in-enjoy namin, pinagtawanan lang namin.”
Zanjoe also noted that they needed to be convincing in their portrayal as lovers.
“Yung trabaho namin hindi pwedeng kulang, hindi pwedeng hilaw. Mas nahahalata.”
For Sam, the hardest part was to be believable in showing that he is truly in love with Zanjoe's character.
“Yun na siguro ang pinaka-hardest challenge ko dito sa movie na maging believable yung love namin sa isa't-isa, but ang gusto ko dito, it’s a light movie, it’s a romantic comedy, so parang di ko ma-imagine ang sarili ko na gawin yung mga movies like Brokeback Mountain, yung sobrang seryoso, heavy drama.”
Brokeback Mountain is the 2005 movie of Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger where they were played cowboys who had sexual relations with each other.
Since The Third Party is a romantic-comedy, Sam and Zanjoe were not required to execute mature scenes, such as kissing scenes or love scenes.
When asked if they are both willing to do kissing scenes with one another in the future as gay characters, Zanjoe answered, “Kung hinihingi ng eksena, bakit hindi?”
Sam agreed as long as there are no intimate scenes required of him.
“Okay lang din, basta [huwag lang] yung sinabi ko kanina na grabe yung laplapan, parang Brokeback Mountain.”
