Meryl Streep criticizes Donald Trump at 2017 Golden Globe Awards

Hollywood’s brightest stars gathered for the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards honoring the best TV shows and movies.

The star-studded ceremony was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on Sunday, January 8, 2017.

The musical La La Land broke a new record for the most single wins at a Golden Globes ever. Starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, this film won total of seven awards including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.

Moonlight won Best Motion Picture in the drama category.

Jimmy Fallon helmed the three-hour ceremony that aired live on NBC.

One of the most-talked about incidents involved Lifetime Achievement awardee Meryl Streep who was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

In a six-minute speech at the Golden Globes, Meryl Streep used her time to criticize U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

She recalled how Trump mocked disabled reporter Serge Kovaleski who suffers from a congenital joint condition.

Meryl lamented, “It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege and power and the capacity to fight back.”

She said it broke her heart to see a powerful person humiliating others publicly, prompting others to do the same thing.

“Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.

“So I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood foreign press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the Committee to Protect Journalists, ’cause we’re going to need them going forward and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth,” said the veteran actress.
