Director Erik Matti said he has nothing to do with the supposed Darna costume that was recently shown to a group of entertainment reporters.
This was in relation to the news about fashion designer Rocky Gathercole showing a sketch of the Darna costume that he reportedly submitted to Star Cinema.
The filmmaker will helm Star Cinema’s movie remake of the popular Pinoy superheroine.
Direk Erik told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that he has his own design team creating a different costume for newest Darna star, Liza Soberano.
“What I know is and we don’t know and if there are other developments, we’re the ones designing the costume.
“In fact, we just finished talking to the costume maker a week ago with our own kind of designs—which is not the designs that that guy showed on his phone.”
Erik continued, “Because I saw the video, somebody sent it to me, asking if that was the design. And I said, he’s not part of our team. He might be famous but I don’t know him.
“And we are working with a costume and we’re working with a costume maker already.”
PEP spoke with Erik on the sidelines of the presscon for Reality Entertainment’s contract signing with Khalil Ramos, held at 9501 Restaurant in ABS-CBN’s ELJ Building, yesterday, July 18.
This writer mentioned that Liza said in a recent interview that she’s willing to don a two-piece swimsuit for the movie, as long as it is required and she is given enough time to prepare for it.
Asked to comment about the possibility of Liza wearing a sexy costume, Erik maintained that the creation of the new Darna costume is "more than the aesthetic, more than the cosmetic, more than just trying to be sexy.”
He elaborated, “I think, bottomline is, after 23 or 24 years of not having a Darna movie on the screen, I think she should be presented in the best superhero look possible.
“And whatever it is that we love about the Darna costume, how she was envisioned in the comic book, I think that’s what we are trying to achieve.”
He promised, "It will be modern, contemporary, very progressive kind of costume for our Darna."
The veteran director also revealed that he’s been tagged by various netizens who have made sketches of the reimagined Darna costume.
“Actually, I collected all of those pictures, but we are going with a totally new and different [look].
“We wanted a costume that is utilitarian, functional, but at the same time can logically come out from Narda to Darna. You get what I mean?
“Hindi lang siya parang nilagyan ng bra at panty. So that’s where we are coming from.”
