Vice Ganda explains why he declined offer to direct his last movie with Coco Martin

Vice Ganda was offered to direct The Super Parental Guardians but he explains why he turned down the chance.

For the fourth time in a row this year, Vice Ganda has made the cut to YES! Magazine’s list of 100 Most Beautiful Stars.

The 41-year-old comedy actor, TV host, and concert performer is the lone star in the category “In a League of His Own.”

He expressed his gratitude through an Instagram post with this caption (published as is): “Thanks so much YES MAGAZINE for once again including me in your list of 100 MOST BEAUTIFUL. O ayan na ha confirmed beautiful ako! Ang kumontra sasampalin ko ng magazine! Chozzzzz!”

What makes Vice Ganda a beautiful person?

“Nakakatawa,” he said during the YES! photo shoot, chuckling.

“Vice Ganda, for me, is a beautiful person because, ah, he is a son who can make his mother smile. And that for me is very beautiful when you can make the most important person in your life smile, like your mom.”

Aside from his mother, Vice Ganda makes so many people not just smile but laugh, based on the whopping box-office returns of his starrers, starting with his first solo movie Petra Kabayoin 2010, as well as the high ratings of his TV shows Gandang Gabi Vice and It’s Showtime all the way to the huge turnout in his concerts at the Araneta Coliseum.

PHENOMENAL BOX-OFFICE STAR. Vice Ganda is also recognized for breaking box-office records for the last six years via The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin (2011); Sisterakas (2012); Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy (2013); The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin (2014); Beauty and the Bestie (2015); and The Super Parental Guardians (2016).

“Wala ka namang ibang maramdaman kung ’di sobrang saya, di ba?” he pointed out.

Ang laking regalo nitosa akin kasi doing that last film, The Super Parental Guardians naminni Coco [Martin], ano siya, e, extra stressful and extra pressure.”

“Kasi that was the movie ko na hindi under Wenn Deramas,” he explained, referring to the director of all his movies since Petrang Kabayo, who succumbed to cardiac arrest on February 29, 2016.

“Kaya when he left, when he passed away, ang laking pressure sa akin at ang laking struggle sa akin kung paano ako gagawa ng pelikula, kung mae-excite ba ang tao kung hindi na Wenn Deramas-Vice Ganda ’yong tandem.

“Kung maghi-hit ba siya ulit. Kaya after all those struggles and pressure and stress, ito ’yong produkto, kaya ang tamis-tamis niyang regalo.”

Not surprisingly, The Super Parental Guardians holds a special place in Vice Ganda’s heart.

“For now, most special,” he admitted, but with caution.

Reward and, at the same time, validation din and, at the same time, parang it’s a learning experience.

“It’s a brand-new learning experience kasi no’ng nawala nga si Direk Wenn Deramas, I had to educate myself again kasi it will be a different experience doing a movie with a different director, a different group of people, ibang environment kasi sobrang nasanay na ’ko, kumbaga, nakalabas ako sa comfort zone ko.”

“Ito, marami akong natutunan,” he said, beaming. “Kaya naman pala kung pagtatrabahuan lang.”

MMFF ATTRACTION. Under director Joyce Bernal, The Super Parental Guardians went on making a killing at the box-office despite the movie’s non-inclusion in the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

“For so many years, I’ve been part of that festival,” he said in reflection. “It’s just that last year, I wasn’t given the chance, pero gayon pa man, nasuportahan din naman ng tao.

This 2017, Vice Ganda makes a comeback to the MMFF. His entry to the annual film fest, which opens on Christmas Day, has been chosen as one of the so-called “Magic 8.”

The ABS-CBN TV host stars, along with Daniel Padilla and 2015 Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, in The Revengers, a Star Cinema production under the direction of Joyce Bernal.

This early, expectations are high for Vice Ganda to once again dominate the box-office race.

“As much as possible, I don’t want to entertain that pressure,” he said,  “Pero sa ayaw at sa gusto ko, maririnig mo at pag kinausap ka ng management, gano’n din, kaya I just pray extra hard.

“I work extra hard. I ask for strength, and guidance. ’Yon lang. Wala ka ring choice kasi the only competition you have is really yourself, not other people.

As much as possible, I just want to enjoy doing films, and nae-enjoy ko siya kasi bukod sa nakakapagpasaya ka, ’yon ang gusto ko.

DIREK VICE?
For some actors, leveling up means occupying the director’s chair. Vice is not an exception. He revealed that he had been offered to direct The Super Parental Guardians.

“I was actually asked when he [Direk Wenn] passed away,” revealed the comedian.

Ganyan-ganyan.

“Nakakatuwa kasi pinaparamdam nila ’yon faith nila,sa akin, ’yong belief nila pinararamdam nila, ’yong support ’binibigay nila.

“Pero ako mismo ang nagsabing, ‘I cannot do it.’ Kasi I have a daily show, Showtime, and it would be very hard napagsabayin ko ’yong dalawa sa paggawa ng pelikula.

Pero I’m looking forward to doing it, but not any time soon, I think.”

In his YES! interview, Vice also revealed feeling insecure at some point in his career.

“I had that feeling a couple of years ago,” he admitted. “Parang mga two years ago—nanawawala ang magic, nawawala ang suporta ng tao sa akin, napupunta sa iba.

“I thought parang tapos na ’yong moment ko. Lahat naman, may schedule ’yan ng moment. Bawat artist, bawat performer, lahat naman kami, may moment to shine.

“’Tapos, when I was given that moment to shine, I was happy, I was grateful. Pero for a time nakaramdam akong, ‘Ay, parang patapos na yata!’

“Marami kasing challenges.

Parang, ‘Huy!’ Panggising lang din.”

The loquacious star of blockbuster movies, TV shows, and concert clammed up when asked what he thinks his biggest contribution to the Philippine entertainment industry.

“I think it’s not for me to say kasi it would be very bragging if I say that my contribution is like this. It’s for other people to recognize,” explained Vice Ganda.
