The MMFF 2017 entry of Derek Ramsay and Jennylyn Mercado is now titled All of You instead of Almost Is Not Enough.

Derek Ramsay is on the final six months of his three-year contract with TV5, and he is keeping his options open until it ends.

“In April, my contract is done,” he said. “I don’t know what to do. First off, sila ang una kong bibigyan ng opportunity if they want to sign me again.”

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had an exclusive interview with the actor-athlete at the launch of his coffeetable book titled The World of Derek Ramsay.

The book launch was held last October 11 at Manila House, a private membership club at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.

“I’ll figure out what I’ll do from there,” he added.

As for TV5’s recent tie-up with the global sports channel ESPN, Derek said he’s “heard stuff like that” but doesn’t know much about it.

A day after the launch of Derek’s book, on October 12, TV5 president Chot Reyes announced in a presscon the merging of its sports channel Sports5 with ESPN.

Sports5 has been rebranded, and it’s now known as ESPN5.

As PEP.ph reported that day, Reyes disclosed that TV5 would focus on news, sports, and digital programming.

TV5’s two known contract artists are Derek Ramsay and Jasmine Curtis-Smith.

About this, Reyes said, “Unfortunately, we are winding down all their contracts already.

“Si Jasmine, in fact, on TV, she’s no longer with us. She is still with us on digital.

“And, I think, the only remaining real star that we have left is Derek.”

He added: “And Derek is there because he is reflective of ESPN. He’s also into sports.

“I’m not just sure hanggang kailan pa yung contract niya.

“But we have absolutely no problem, especially, with me, we have a very close relationship with Derek.

“So we continue to have him as a talent.”

For his part, Derek admitted he hasn’t been around the people from his home network lately.

“Wala pa ’kong masyadong contact with TV5.

“We were going to do something for sports, pero hiningi ko muna kung puwede tapusin ko muna ang pelikula kasi sobrang pagod ako sa movie.

“May deadline kasi ang movie.”

Derek is currently filming the romance drama All Of You, which is an entry to the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

All Of You is now the new title of the MMFF 2017 entry previously known as Almost is not Enough.

Derek reiterated that he is not yet in talks with TV5 regarding his expiring contract.

“It’s too early,” he pointed out. “January [2018], mag-uusap kami.

“Then we’ll see from there.”

Derek, who first made a name as an ABS-CBN talent, signed up with TV5 in 2012. Three years later, he renewed his three-year contract.

His last project with TV5 is Amo, the action-packed series directed by Cannes-winning filmmaker Brillante Mendoza

“’Yong Amo, dapat lalabas na, but he [Direk Brillante] has a very good reason why [for the delay].

“It’s the first-ever for a Philippine show. Hinold siya for a very good reason.”

MMFF 2017 ENTRY. Derek’s new movie, All Of You, reunites him with former leading lady Jennylyn Mercado.

They starred in the rom-com English Only, Please, which was one of the top-grossing entries of MMFF 2014.

He played Julian Parker, a Fil-Am based in New York, U.S.A. who travels to his Filipino mother’s homeland to confront his Pinay ex-girlfriend.

Julian then hires a tutor on the English language, Tere Madlansacay (Jennylyn), so he can have his spiteful letter translated into Filipino.

Derek and Jennylyn won Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, in that year’s edition of MMFF.

Derek told PEP that his role in All of You—yes, the film originally titled Almost Is Not Enough—is that a “bad boy.”

“Nagyo-yosi ako dito,” he said, grinning. "I have to wear a [fake] tattoo and I had to smoke cigarettes no’ng nasa Taiwan kami.”

The hunky actor known for his healthy and athletic lifestyle cringed at the thought of smoking cigarettes while filming in Taiwan.

“Di ba, one day kami do’n?” he reminded us. “Naka-one pack ako.”

“It’s horrible. Every time na [they say] ‘Derek, you have to smoke in a scene.’ [I go] ‘Ugh!’

“Sabi nila, huwag ko na i-inhale. Pero kailangan. Magmumukha akong tanga kung…”

He laughed as he recalled how he tried hard to make those scenes believable.

Smoking cigarettes aside, Derek is all praises for All of You, which is also his and Jennylyn’s reunion movie with their English Only, Please director Dan Villegas.

“I love this movie!’ he exclaimed. “I find it so much cuter than English Only, Please.”

“It’s a more mature role for me and Jen,” he added, calling his leading lady by her nickname.

“Very current, like may dating apps. [It’s about] two people who fall in love.

“Nagkakilala through a dating app. Nanggaling sa painful breakup.

“It shows the real process of how relationships work. It’s not all dreamy and perfect.

“Magsasawa kayo sa isa't-isa. You take each other for granted.

“’Yung process ng dalawang character namin, she wants to get married. Ako, I’m happy-go-lucky… Live each day, one day at a time.”

His character resorts to a drastic move that will turn their world upside down.

Derek explained how All of You is more mature than English Only, Please: “Mas may lalim ang characters namin dito,” he explained.

“’Yung English Only, Please was cute, di ba? This one, there are really some very funny scenes and some very mature scenes that we go through. Ang ganda ng balance.”

He added that it was a conscious decision for them to differentiate All of You from English Only, Please.

“We wanted to make sure na hindi mo makikita si Tere Madlansacay—yun ang una namin pinrioritize, na hindi lalabas si Tere.”

Derek has only one word for Jennylyn as a co-star: “Great!”

“It’s been three years, ang bilis,” he said. “We both matured a lot.

“She’s also in a wonderful relationship [with her boyfriend Dennis Trillo]. She’s very happy.

“Pinag-usapan namin ang mga nangyari sa buhay niya, new contract niya sa GMA… The movies that she did.”

WORKING WITH AN EX-GF. All of You also stars Solenn Heussaff and Tom Rodriguez as the lead characters’ past lovers.

In real life, Derek and Solenn were in a romantic relationship from around 2003 to 2007.

They’ve remained friends, and even worked together in the 2016 comedy flick Love is Blind.

Prior to filming their scenes together, Derek said he hadn’t seen Solenn since she got married in May 2016 to Nico Bolzico, an Argentine businessman who’s now known as an Internet sensation and a product endorser.

“We had a lot to talk about,” the actor said, nodding.

Last October 8, Derek and Solenn both hit the runway for the charity event Fashion Can Serve 2017.

“Pwedeng humugot from our past kasi we are exes,” he said. “So I was able to use that for our scenes.”

He pointed out, though, that Solenn had “very minimal scenes” since he and Jennylyn dominated the movie.

Derek also made it clear that his onscreen partnership with Solenn posed no problem with his real-life girlfriend of more than two years, Joanne Villablanca, a commercial model.

“No!” he said, laughing. “Imagine mo, we [Solenn and I] had kissing scenes in Love is Blind. She’s okay with that.”

“No problem with her,” he said.

Derek happily reported that All of You is “almost done.”

He remembered the production filming in Taiwan over just one day, from four in the morning to four the following morning.

They shot scenes in the hilly town of Jiufen in Northern Taiwan, a personal choice of Direk Dan, who fell in love with the place.

Taiwan was also the location of some key scenes in #Walang Forever, the MMFF 2015 entry from the same team behind English Only, Please and All of You, led by producer Joji Alonso and director Dan Villegas.

#Walang Forever lead stars Jennylyn Mercado and Jericho Rosales won that year’s festival Best Actress and Best Actor.

Jennylyn and Jericho were supposed to reunite in All of You, when it was still titled Almost Is Not Enough.

Derek is just so happy to have filled in the role left behind by Jericho, and he has high hopes for the movie.

He mentioned that Jennylyn earned a back-to-back Best Actress win last year with #Walang Forever.

“Sana this year, manalo ulit siya,” he said of his leading lady.

He added, “Basta ang importante diyan, maganda ang project namin.

“Natutuwa naman sila Direk [Dan], si Attorney [Joji Alonso]. Ang sarap ng feeling, kasi si Direk, when he likes what he sees, he really tells you that you’ve done a good job.

“Naka-ilan ako kay Direk Dan [na sinabi niya], ‘Ang galing mo sa eksena,’ kaya nakakatuwa.”
