According to veteran singer and stage actress Celeste Lagaspi, co-star Paulo Avelino in Ang Larawan had to dub and redub his scenes several times for the movie.
Ang Larawan is one of the eight official entries to the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Paulo, who joined the movie’s cast in 2015, plays the role of Tony Javier, a vaudeville pianist, whom the Marasigan sisters, played by Rachel Alejandro and Joanna Ampil, take in as a boarder.
Despite having to ask Paulo to redub, Celeste praised the actor ny saying, “He’s wonderful! He auditioned for the role, number one, and he took voice lessons for several months.”
As Paulo’s dubbing coach, Celeste reveals, “Pinahirapan ko siya. He dubbed and re-dubbed until I was happy with what he did. We were very impressed.”
Celeste also makes it clear it wasn’t only Paulo who had to undergo the redubbing. “Everybody wanted to do their very best. Hindi sila nagrereklamo,” adds Celeste.
As for the voice quality of Paulo, Celeste says it suits his role perfectly. “Ang role niya medyo uncouth, bastos. [Ang boses niya], hindi si Martin Nievera or Basil Valdez, pero hindi rin naman babagay [ang ganung boses],” she points out.
But the singing was all Paulo—except the piano playing, Celeste reveals. Paulo worked hard to hold his own alongside distinguished theater artists.
“Paulo can definitely carry a tune. Nung pinapabalik ko na siya para magre-dub, alam na alam na niya ang music. Di na siya kailangan turuan ng music. Yung nuances na lang; yung tamang tone,” shares Celeste.
Ang Larawan is the film adaptation of Larawan, The Musical, which is based on National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin’s English play, A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino.
Directed by Loy Arcenas, the movie also stars Nonie Buencamino, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Ogie Alcasid, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Sandino Martin, Cris Villonco, and Aicelle Santos.
