Paulo Avelino admitted that shooting the “seduction scene” with Rachel Alejandro for their 2017 Metro Manila Film Fest entry Ang Larawan was quite nervewracking.
“It wasn’t an easy thing to do,” said the 29-year-old actor in an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal).
“Because prior to that, we had a lot of rehearsals, we had to do different versions of it. Fun and intense sa shooting.”
Paulo went on to say that moviegoers can only imagine the tedious process of mounting an intimate scene together with a bunch of production people behind the scenes.
But according to Paulo, Rachel is such a breeze to work with.
“I think since we’re both professional, we just tackled the roles professionally.
“Professional naman lahat ng tao sa set, alam mo yun?
“You always have to get over that shyness or that wall that prevents you from making a scene better.”
PEP.ph’s latest interview with Paulo was at the presscon of the Metro Manila Film Fest entry, Ang Larawan, held at the Promenade Mall in Greenhills, San Juan City last December 7.
Rachel, for her part, joked about how much she enjoyed doing an intimate scene with Paulo.
The newlywed actress laughingly quipped, “Nag-enjoy naman kami ni Paulo! Huwag niyo na lang sabihin sa asawa ko kung gaano kami nag-enjoy!”
"Hindi... It was actually a great experience kasi nakita ko talaga, like everyone mentioned, his humility and his willingness to learn. Lesson sa akin 'yan e."
Rachel also compared how it was like shooting the movie version of Ang Larawan to the musical that she was cast in back in 1998.
"Actually, sobrang nahirapan talaga ako because of the fact na feeling ko na alam ko na yung part, na 20 years ko na 'tong kinakanta in my head.
"I was so confident that I would ace this and it would be so easy. But in fact, it wasn't because ibang-iba yung dynamic ko with Paulo, ibang-iba yung dynamic ko with Joanna Ampil."
GRADED A. Based on the play A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino by National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin, Ang Larawan tells of how financially troubled Marasigan sisters Candida and Paula hold on to their father’s masterpiece in spite of great interest and attractive offers from potential buyers.
West End star Joanna Ampil plays Candida while multi-awarded pop singer/host and entrepreneur Rachel portrays Paula.
Urian Best Actor Paulo Avelino takes the role of Tony Javier, the boarder who is persuading the sisters to sell the painting to an American buyer.
Directed by Loy Arcenas, Ang Larawan was graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).
One of the members of CEB was quoted as saying, "Ang Larawan is a brilliant, fabulous production with great acting and excellent technical elements.”
AUDITIONING FOR THE ROLE. In the continuation of PEP.ph's interview, Paulo said that he went through an audition before he was offered to do the role of Tony Javier.
"I always wanted to do a musical film. I never expected it to be this early. They asked for an audition and I auditioned for it."
The Kapamilya star also described the challenge of singing and playing the piano at the same time.
"Actually, there's a more complicated version of the piano. They simplified it. Tapos they decided na hindi ko talaga kaya kumanta at mag-piano ng sabay, so I just had to go with the beat."
BOX-OFFICE CHALLENGE. When asked how he feels about Ang Larawan being pitted against big-budgeted films, Paulo said that his movie with Rachel has its own charm.
"Parang alam naman na natin kung ano ang magta-top gross. Pero we're still hoping na at least more than kumita, maraming makapanood.
"Dapat siyang panoorin kasi marami siyang sinasabi tungkol sa atin bilang Filipino, kung paano nawawala ang kultura natin."
