Tippy Dos Santos admitted that she initially wanted to have her rape scene removed from her movie Abomination.
This indie film is one of the five entries chosen for the 2018 Sinag Maynila film festival. The fourth edition will take place in select SM cinemas from March 7-15, 2018.
In her Sinag Maynila 2018 entry, Tippy is cast as a woman is found unconscious in a city street. She is brought to a psychiatric hospital but she escapes in order to prove her real identity.
Directed by Yam Laranas, the whole movie is in English. Its screenplay is by Paolo Vacirca and Oscar Fogelstrom, based on an original concept of Yam and Gin de Mesa.
The official entries were announced yesterday, February 21, during the press conference held at SM North The Block.
When PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked Tippy to describe the most difficult scene she had to do in the movie, she revealed, "The most difficult scene I had to do was the rape scene.
"Siyempre, hindi ko pa na-experience yun at sana wala sa ating maka-experience yun. It was having to think about it na gagawin ko yun, kahit kakilala ko yung kasama ko sa eksena.
"Tumatawag ako sa management ko, 'Wala na po bang mapapatanggal niyan sa script?'
"Hindi ko alam kung paano ipo-portray yung character ko during that moment.
"But halos 10 minutes lang namin ginawa yung eksena. Tinanong ko si Direk [Yam Laranas], 'Direk, tapos na po?'
"I didn't even feel as if I was in that position.
"Hindi ko man lang naramdaman na ni-rape na pala ako dun sa eksena!"
The crowd laughed as Tippy continued narrating, "Pero nung pinanood namin afterwards, parang totoo po talaga."
Direk Yam, who was seated beside Tippy, pointed out, "Yun po ang magic ng lens."
After the general press conference, the theater and movie actress shared more details about her film.
"Takot na takot na gagawin ko pero hindi ko naman naramdaman, hindi ko na-experience.
"Hanggang ngayon, figment pa rin siyang imagination ko. Sana never kong malaman.
"Ito was more of the mind games having to do the scene but when we did it, talagang inalagaan po ako ni Direk."
When asked why she wanted to have the scene removed, she explained:
"Kasi ako po, ilang beses ako kailangan mag kissing scene. Hindi talaga ako pumapayag."
She only made an exception for Sam Concepcion when they shot a kissing scene for the 2012 movie musical I Do Bidoo Bidoo: Heto nAPO Sila.
"Ginawa ko lang yung kay Sam kasi kababata ko siya."
The 23-year-old performer then admitted that in doing intimate scenes, "Hindi talaga ako comfortable. Pagkatao ko na yun na kahit kailangan siya sa eksena, siguro hindi ko pa po magagawa kasi hindi lang ako comfortable. Siyempre, hindi mo gaano ka-close...
"Psychological lahat for me. It's more of the fear of having to do the scene pero nung ginawa namin, okay naman pala."
Prior to doing this rape scene, Tippy just had one kissing scene with Sam Concepcion.
"Kahit for theater, never po akong [gumawa ng kissing scene]. Parang, from kiss to rape, wow!"
How did they make her feel at ease before the shoot?
"Lagi nilang sinasabi, 'Tippy, okay lang 'yan. Tapos aasarin nila ako. They didn't allow my mom on set kasi nga alam na nilang stressful yung having to do the scene.
"Nung ginawa namin ang scene, puro camera illusions, lenses, and shaking of the bed," she said with a laugh.
In the future, would she accept roles that would require her to do kissing scenes or intimate scenes?
"Personally, hindi po siguro. Kahit nga nung pinanood ko yung buong movie, hindi ako makatingin. Iniisip ko, paano pa kaya mapapanood ng daddy or mommy ko.
"Personally, yung intimate scenes, hindi. Pwede naman i-insinuate yun without having to do intimate scenes talaga. For me, yun yung personal opinion ko."
Aside from Abomination by Yam Laranas, Sinag Maynila 2018 will also feature the full-length entries Bomba (The Bomb) by Ralston Jover, El Peste Romansa by Richard Somes, Melodrama /Random / Melbourne! by Matthew Victor Pastor, and Tale of the Lost Boys by Joselito "Jay" Altarejos Jr.
